My iPhone (with a broken screen) won't turn on.

My iphone 6s display is broken, but up until a few days ago I was still able to use the touch screen with voice over. Now it just won't power on. I tried connecting it to iTunes on a computer, but the computer didn't recognize it. HELP!

Does the phone power on at all (apple logo)? How did the display break? What happens if you plug it into a wall charger?

My best guess is that the battery was damaged when the screen was damaged, and now it won't turn on because of it. However, to make any real claims, I would need more information.

Does the phone power on at all (apple logo)? How did the display break? What happens if you plug it into a wall charger? Anything else you can add to help give some background?

I got it from a friend, and I believe they dropped it in a glass of Coke during dinner. So the battery idea makes sense to me. All it shows is the apple logo on loop. The backlight is burnt out but I can see the apple logo if I put a flashlight up to it.

Dropping it in a glass of Coke is an important element that should have been stated right from the get go, not a year later ;>).

If you can see a dim image, then at the very least, the backlight circuit has been damaged. However, the looping is caused by other issues. Here’s what you can try, if you still have the device:

  • Open your phone and remove the logic board (follow this guide)
  • Inspect the logic board, especially around the connectors and look for corrosion.
  • Inspect both sides of the board. Unfortunately, most of the board is covered in shields. That's usually where the damage is occurring.
  • Put your board in a container with >90% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit for a while.
  • Use a soft brush, like a toothbrush and lightly brush away any corrosion you see.
  • Rinse in alcohol and repeat.
  • Let it air dry for a day.
  • Re-assemble and hope for the best.

You should also replace the battery if it has swollen. Resist the temptation to pop it to let the gas out. A compromised Li-ion battery is a fire hazard. If the device appears to power up but behaves erratically, then use a tool like 3uTools to flash the firmware as it may be corrupted.

A professional repair shop that does water damage repair may be able to recover your phone or the data because they have access to pro-level ultrasonic baths and specialized cleaners as well as the skills to troubleshoot your board. Many shops have a no fix/no fee policy so you don't have to spend money to find out if the phone is fixable or not.
