iPhone restore fail with "no device found"

i just got a messed up iphone 6. screen broken, missing home button.

put a screen on it, no spare home button. power up and immediately need to connect to itunes. try to restore in itunes, it would try to restore, but at the end, it error out with "no device found". try a whole bunch of thing, always back to no device found error.

Finally, took the home button from a iphone 6 plus, put it all back and plug into laptop, it went back to restoring, went away and when i came back, its at the hello screen. praise God!!

Now, waiting for icloud password.

Just want to share this, incase others have the same issue.
