I know the lower memory slot is a known problem and that is what has happened to mine. However, since the max memory for this Powerbook is 2 Gb. will it recognize a 2Gb chip in the working slot?

To my knowledge the largest single RAM chip that your PowerBook can use is a 1 GB chip.
