TV works, but doesn't respond to input (buttons or remote)

Was given this free, with no remote.
When powered up the TV turns on, plays a startup sound and displays the name of a previously tuned local channel. The red LED light for power is constant, and i do get an image on the screen (presently, telling me to connect an aerial)
The problem is that it wont respond to the remote, OR to the touch buttons on the screen itself - i plan to use this purely for a screen (PC/Console), so as soon as i can force it to HDMI 1 all my problems go away, as i can power it on/off at the wall.

What remote are you using? Also, is it possible the keypad has issues and was disconnected internally? And another thing, have you tried a firmware update?
