replaced battery and still have problem starting

The only way I can get the computer to restart is by doing the following:

1) I hold down the shift key, control key, option key and power button for 10 seconds .

2) then I have to open up the case, remove the battery, replug it in, and then the computer restarts if I depress the power button after plugging the battery back in.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? This is the 2nd battery that I received from iFixit. Could it be a lemon or is it something more? (And, I don't think this is related, but I also replaced the HD with a 1TB Fusion drive (Toshiba). That was tested externally and it is fine.) (The battery charges okay but doens' last all that long, but recall this is a 2009 MacBook Pro.)

I am hesitant to ask iFixit to send me a 3rd battery but could that possibly be the issue- Please weigh in on this as it is a mystery to me! Thank you so much

Thank you for your response but the visual display nor Mag adapter is not the issue (brand new). I have tried all of those options and still have the problem... it charges fine, and I am typing on the computer as I write and using battery only. The problem is when I power down. After I power down, the only way this computer will restart is if I go through holding the keys shift, control, and option as well as the power button for 10 seconds. Then I have to open up the case, disconnect the battery, and then press the power button again, carefully screw the back back in and it will function via battery or electrical cord. But having to do that every time is ridiculous. I think the battery may be a lemon.

Hi Ellen,

To me this sounds like a issue with your charging controller chip on the board. It is a fairly common issue especially on older MacBooks. This could also be a issue with the keyboard and or trackpad. To rule this out we can attempt to power the computer on using the power pads. If the issue persists with the keyboard and trackpad unplugged you most likely have a issue with the SMC or ISL6259 chip.

I am guessing you have a 820-2879 board or similar.

Looking at the top side of your board right above then fan, you will see a few chips and 2 empty pads. (I have attached pictures). I want you to get a pair of tweezers and place them on these pads to short them. Remember this is with the keyboard and trackpad unplugged. Note what the fan does. If the fan spins great as it is entering a S0 state and the issue is probably your keyboard or trackpad. If not it is most likely a board issue. Also be sure that your board is the correct model by looking at the layout I posted.

Wow, what an answer ... unfortunately the images are so small (even when I blow them up) that I cannot see the diagrams; but I may try and open up the computer and follow your suggestions above ... I do not know what kind of board i have, it is the original 2009 unibody equipment except for the battery and HD, which I replaced ... I am not sure that putting any more money replacing parts is worth it at this point since I cannot go past El Capitan since it is "vintage" 2009, but it's worth it to open it up, try and look under the hood to see if what you described is the problem ... can you post larger images of what I should be looking at? Thank you so much for your post and response!!

If your Mac won't turn on and you have ruled out display issues, try these steps.

Verify that you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.

If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power, try another power cord or adapter, if available. If you're using a Mac notebook, learn about troubleshooting MagSafe adapters, and leave the power adapter connected long enough to provide an adequate charge to the battery.

Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to your Mac. This includes things like printers, USB hubs, or mobile devices.

Hold down the power button for ten seconds. Then press the power button again to see if the Mac turns on.

Reset the SMC.

If you recently installed memory or a drive in your Mac, make sure it's compatible and installed correctly. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive to see if the issue persists.
