Hi Arlei. I, too, had this problem and got sick of using tape to keep the dust cup closed. Fortunately, I kept the spring. First, you have to get the little orange clip off. Easier said than done. It takes brute force, but be careful you do not break off the little bumps on the side of the clip and that you do not break the clear housing. On the inside of the orange clip is a raised “x”; and the clear housing has a small round cup on the inside. The spring goes over the “x” and will actually stay there. Then the spring is centred into the round cup on the housing and you push the clip into the housing. You have to do this carefully and make sure both bumps go in place at the same time. It took me a few tries, but I finally got it. It is now good as new. I hope this helps, Arlei. I hate being thought of as the incompetent “little woman” who cannot fix something reasonable simple. Let me know if you are successful. Willi Burgess.

Thank you so much for this! I didn’t have the original spring but broke apart a tiny flashlight and used the spring from the battery pack, although the metal tips were quite sharp. But I made it work! Your directions were easy to follow and very helpful. Thank you again! Brigitte

I had the same issue - I guess one day the vacuum fell over and the spring popped out never to be seen again. Fortunately I had some misc springs of various sizes, so found one that fit. I used a flat head screwdriver to pop off the latch to the dust container. Once I did that, I put the spring in the spot where the old one was and popped the latch back in. Problem solved. This thread helped me realize what was going on, so thanks for posting the information. If anyone else is having the same issue, it’s an easy enough fix once you have a replacement spring. Took me maybe 5 minutes to do.

Thank you everyone who posted - I used info from each! My Shark fell over, lost the spring and at the time was not even sure it was part of it. But door kept opening dumping all the debris out! I used a spring from a ball point pen. It didn’t fit over the “x”, but thanks to cup mention it positioned there and squashed down the latch. I also appreciate the flat screwdriver mention, otherwise I wouldn’t have gotten it off again. I am so relieved and appreciate all the thoughtful practical advice.

Hi, I had the same question but it turns out I was over thinking it. It just means that the X kind of marks the location on the plastic doohickey. Just place it across (above) "x" and squash shut. Its purpose is to widen space so that latch stays closed, and also provide enough give so it can sproing open.

Did you manage to fix this Leslie? I have the same problem and the same spring as you show in your photo. I can't see how the spring fits.

Thank you for all , all the info was very helpful , as I too lost the spring when the vacuum tips over. To get the spring fit over the cross I widen the spring top by stretching the few wires with a small jewelry pliers and it worked.
