3.1 diesel grand Cherokee

Can anyone tell me why my 3.1 diesel starts revs then cuts out. It will only run if I hold throttle at about 1500 revs for several minutes. Once it reaches a certain temperature it runs fine .

@thistledown right now it sounds like glowplugs may be a possibility. Still trying to hunt down the manual for your engine. UK or EU model?

Update On jeep . it will only start if I spin starter for long time nd will rev up to 2.5-3000 revs for 3-4 seconds then instantly cuts out as if no fuel getting through

A diesil motor dose not have spark plugs it works by compressing the fuel air mixture until it explodes which it dose when the pressure is great enough. Of course it works best when warm in fact if it is to cold it won't start at all. To get around this problem diesil motors have a warming plug, since I have never been in a jeep grand Cherokee I can't tell you if the plug has a separate switch or it is imbeded in the ignition key. You should either hold the switch down for 30 sec before starting or turn the key the the warming position before ignition. If you have done this and it is still problematic check the fuse for your warming plug or the plug itself might have burnt out. I hope this helps

hey dude I was considering if you sorted your jeep yet. I still believe its the glow plugs, although there are a few different ways that they could have problems. 1 check your fuses if one of them is not working that could be it. 2 there could be a short circuit of some kind stopping the plugs from getting enough power. 3 one or more of the plus could be burnt out 4.The wire that glows on your dash that shows your plugs are warm might be burnt out stopping the circuit. If you have a multi meter it should be sime to check
