Is it normal to have play in your drive shaft?

I have a 1997 GMC sonoma, and if you take your hand, and push/pull on the drive shaft sideways, it moves probably 16th of an inch. Is this normal or doe sit mean that my middle bearing is bad (2 part drive shaft).

@parzival some movement is definitely expected and 1/16th of an inch seems to be within those tolerances. Make sure that you do not get a vibration sound (thumping) while driving which would be a more common for that bearing.

That's what i thought too! Although I can't realy tell as of right now. I have bad shocks in the back and I have no way of telling if the noise I hear is the shocks bouncing or the drive shaft vibrating. Ill replace them soon, and then I can tell.

@parzival You determine a worn out bearing really quick. It is sort off like your driveshaft knocking on the floor board asking for permission to come inside the vehicle. Very distinct sound:-) Good luck with your shocks and do us a favor. Get your camera out and create a guide when you replace those shocks. Use this guide https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/new for that. I myself am going to have to change the shocks on my F-150 this weekend and will do the same. That way ifixit repair guides for everybody keeps on growing

Ya man will do! And ya, then its just the back shocks. I know the knock your talking about and thats not it. Its just a slight vibration at the rear and when it rains, it gets so horrendous that the truck will not do over 50.
