What is the best way to heat up batteries for removal?

I currently watch all the tear downs and I see people use heat guns or the IOpener and i am wondering how long do you leave the Iopener on screens before they are damaged and also when warming up batteries to be removed due to adhesive is it wise to use heat and what is the best way to go about it ?

And this doesn't damage anything? Always thought applying heat to a battery was a no no.

I don't think anyone ever quantified how much heat is necessary. An iOpener, or similar magic bag, will probably get to ~60-65C. Depending on the device, you want to transfer enough heat untill the device is uncomfortably hot to the touch but will obviously be below 65C. I personally use a heat pad and set the temperature to ~70C and leave the device until I think the entire device is at that temperature, or close enough. If the heat is too high or the device left on the heat pad for too long, you may damage the LCD (this applies more to an iPad).

I don't think you can damage a device with an iOpener or hair dryer. If you use a heat gun, watch out because they can throw a lot of heat very quickly.

So you would recommend a heat pad for screen removals? also how do you get out batteries that have adhesive to them ?

The heat pad is essential for iPads and very practical for applying heat to any other device. The batteries have pull tab adhesive so that is the first option. If the tabs break, sometimes you can still grab them underneath the battery. When you can't, you have to apply heat and gently pry them (no pressure on the logic board though).

Thanks!
