Does not start, flashing light on startup button

My Macintosh G5 desktop suddenly will not start. When I press the start button, the start button just flashes a white light.

I made a mistake in the description . . . sorry about that.

I have a Power Mac G5, Model No. A1047.

I would appreciate any help in solving this.

Thanks,

Leo

The last 3 letters are: QPP

With the side cover off, when I press the start button, the only light that lights up is a red flashing light. It makes a whirring sound. (Best that I can describe).

Thanks,

Leo

The new battery should be here in 2 days, will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks so much!

I put the new battery in and the red light inside lights up. The fans and cooling system, (I think that’s what it is), make the usual sound, not the bad sound as before, but now a more normal sound. The startup sound did not come on. After holding the start button down for about 10 seconds, as requested, there was a sound like a horn going off. I stopped and pulled the plug.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Leo

Please look on the bottom of the stand for a Axxx number and a EMC number also the processor speed. Thanks

I made a mistake in the description. What I have is a Power Mac G5.

Model No. A1047.

I have had Macs since 1988, and nothing like this has ever happened.

Holding down the power button for more than 5 seconds on almost any Mac will reset it and give a long tone. Nothing to fear.

Take the door off and look on the bottom of the frame opening and give us the last three letters of your serial number. There are 10 different G5's within the A1047 series. Also locate the diagnostic LEDs on the logic board, Press the start button and tell us what they do, also any other lights or sounds that you may get.

If you have never changed the PRAM battery, I would do that first: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20T...

Next unplug everything, press and hold the power on button for 10 seconds.

when mine did this to me, it turned on once I removed the PRAM battery entirely.

and.......outside of losing your date and time and having to reselect your printer and reset up your internet every time you start, how did your fix work?

Pretty well, although it continued to randomly shut off occasionally. I think I nailed it this time; reseated all RAM, PSU connector, video card, and anything else I could reseat. After all, it started doing this after a car ride. Since doing that massive reseating it's been flawless, but I couldn't log into 10.5 server until it was no longer 1969 (kept rejecting correct password)!

I really don't believe that removing the PRAM battery is a fix. Reseating everything however makes much more sense. Also with the battery installed your date will hold until you zap the PRAM

Well at the point where it wouldn't turn on at all (we were hearing a clicking noise upon pressing the power button), that's when I pulled the battery and it turned on, but kept randomly shutting off. I'm now confirming that my Power Mac has been declared fixed, with massive reseating as the cure.

And I really don't need the battery since it's my file server and never gets turned off anyway, so no worries there. Way more obnoxious to have a dead one in a laptop.

Just for the record, my G5 never lapsed again, so reseating everything did indeed fix it. =D
