How do I go about getting the valve adjustment nut back on .

So upon following the instructions for the valve adjustment. I was turning the bottom nut to loosen the bottom lock nut a bit and then while i tried to turn the top nut to adjust the gap the adjuster nut moved to the side and popped out and went flying.? Luckily I was able to find it but no metal was damaged off so now how do I go about getting the top nut back on.? Do I have to take off the levers that touch the cam lobes.??? Plz help.? Also is it a bad thing that the valve gap clearance on all of the valves are touching.? the levers and valve adjustment nuts have no gap at all. On any of them.? Im guessing it's pretty bad.

@haystackalack which instructions did you follow (link?)? What do you mean by this "Also is it a bad thing that the valve gap clearance on all of the valves are touching.? " and this "the levers and valve adjustment nuts have no gap at all"? Post some images of your valvetrain and point out to what you are referring to. BTW what year and what engine is this?

Also I'm confused by why the nut went flying, generally they aren't under any spring tension. Unless of course during setting the valve adjustment gap, you haven't released the pressure on the valves by positioning the cam adjustment. If that is the case, then yes your nut will fly off and you will have to set it up again. But if you were following the instructions, this shouldn't have happened.

IRT valve gap being zero (valves touching); Yes, it is a very bad thing particularly if you have a diesel engine. If your valve adjusters are too tight, you are leaving your valves partially open at all times. This will result in burned valves due to hot gasses passing around the valve head and seat, especially the exhaust valves. You will also experience lost compression resulting in a power loss.

Readjust your valves to the clearance specification for your engine. A quiet Diesel engine is one that needs a valve adjustment.
