If the machine makes no noise when the coffee button is pressed (and the steam switch is not pressed) then the pump is most likely dead and will need to be replaced. You'll want to avoid turning the machine on until you can get the boiler refilled, as letting it heat up with no water in it can damage the heating element; the steam you're seeing is the remaining water in the boiler evaporating.

The pump will operate when the steam wand is activated. If you hear the pump running, when you generate steam or even hot water from the steaming wand, the pump is probably operating. If the pump doesn’t make noise when you press the brew cycle button, there could be a wiring fault. Even if the machine is gummed up with mineralization, the pump motor should still make noise. If not, check the wiring for a missing connection. Always prime the pump when the machine has been depleted of water or it has been standing around.

If you have had the machine sitting around for a while, you will need to demineralize it. Depending upon how badly it is clogged up, you may not need to remove parts. Use a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and distilled or demineralized water. Fill the water reservoir with 4 cups (1 liter) of the mixture. Heat up the machine. Do not attach the portafilter yet. When it reaches operating temperature, operate the steam wand. It will not steam but will send water through. When you have sent 100-150 ml through. If it is running slow, you may need to blow out some mineralization or hardened milk. Turn on the steam cycle. When the system reaches temperature, open the steam knob full open until high pressure steam comes out. This should clear any debris. Now turn off the steam wand and attempt to run the brew cycle. You should hear the pump attempt to move fluid into the brew group. Fluid should come out of the brew group screen. After 5-10 seconds, stop the pump and let the machine sit for 15 minutes at temperature. Try again to run the pump. After a while, the mineralization should clear. if not, you may need to disassemble the brew hoses to see if the demineralization fluid is reaching the brew group. Follow the flow from the pump to the portafilter head. You may need to disassemble the brew head and clean mineralization or coffee deposits from the screen.

Once you have things running again, you need to clear the demineralization fluid from the machine by running at least one tank (1.5 liters) of distilled or demineralized water through the machine. If at the end, of the process, the water coming out of the machine still tastes sour, you need to run more clean water through the system.

Next you need to make sure that your portafilter isn’t gummed up. If you have hot water coming out of the brew group when you operate the brew button but still have no coffee coming out when you brew, your portafilter might need to be cleaned or replaced. Parts kits are available from several sources including coffeesection dot com and cafeparts dot com (search on Saeco portafilter or the name of your machine) for rebuilding the portafilter. Rather than describing the disassembly cleaning and reassembly process, it would be best to direct you to a video on YouTube which you can find here: https://youtu.be/lOmyiOmUv3Y.

Good luck.
