Home button doesn't work after a dip in a puddle?

I dropped my phone in a puddle and removed it immediately. Unfortunately it was submerged for a few seconds and was on at the time. After I took it out of the puddle I powered it down and let it dry for a week. Everything is working fine now except the home button doesn't work and I have to power down and restart to move between functions or applications. Does anyone have any thoughts before I tackle this problem? I'm thinking about what tools and parts I most likely need to fix this problem. Thanks for any input.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm new to this so let me ask, if I need to replace the Flex (Home Button Flex Ribbon Cable?) then am I correct that I'll need to purchase the tools necessary to remove the front panel?

you should only need a suction cup. you can improvise by putting a long length of packing tape on screen and then folding it over itself near the home button so you have a tab to pull on. (suction cup is by far the easier way and you can buy them anywhere)

you'll also need a small philips head screwdriver- no idea of the size but I'll put the links in and the tools are listed. Remplacement de l'écran complet de l'iPhone 3G

don't be too hasty to accept my answer... we might not have sorted it yet

No 1.... Most waterdamage problems are resolved simply by cleaning.

Clean the internal parts of your phone with isopropyl alcohol or similar. In your case pay particular attention to the top of the dock connector and the back of display/home button. Once all is dry reassemble and see if it works.

If home button still won't work then you can buy the flex on eBay or similar places very cheaply. To replace it you will need to remove the LCD and digitiser from the display frame(follow the guide linked at right of this page)the home button and flex is only secured by double sided tape and is fairly straight forward to remove. Swap the flex over, replace screens and try again. ( you'll prob need some new screen adhesive tape)check all works then apply your tape for front screen. If home button still won't work try cleaning top of dock again/replace dock or just the top flex (no4). Good luck

Also, look on the backside of the screen assembly and make sure you have both pins on the home button ribbon. Sometimes people manipulate the phones and accidentally knock one off. Easy fix with solder though.
