How to desolder charging and micro usb port?

Hi,

first of all, I tried to replace 2 charging port for laptop motherboard and one micro usb port for a tablet and I destroyed all the boards.

I'm feeling like I don't have the right tools.

Basically, I never tried to solder anything, because I just can't desolder those ports. I don't have flux. I'm wondering if without flux I should be able to desolder?

It takes like 1 hour to remove all the tin then there still have some tin everywhere that I can't remove with my desoldering brain and the port is still stuck there. Finally, the board just burn.

Is there a guide to desoldering a mini USB port that is built into a flex ribbon cable? I would rather replace the entire ribbon but it’s no longer for sale anywhere, so my only option is to desolder the damaged port and solder a new one to the flex ribbon cable. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

@F P Old post I know but!, Always a but. If a component is soldered to a flex ribbon you can hold the iron horizontally and hold the ribbon with the component on the iron shaft near the tip on the flat bit. If you use flux it will soften the solder in no time and the part can be removed to be used again. (May need 3 hands or a friend to help)

@geekinside you will need flux and desoldering braid. Check this video as well as this guide Comment souder et dessouder des connexions.

Hi oldturkey,

I saw alot of guides and I thought I was ready.

I have the desoldering braid, but I am not sure if the desoldering process should be easy without the flux?

I mean, every guide and video I see, the desoldering process seems simple and easy. However, when I try it takes me 1 hour to remove the half of the solder.

No it is not. you will need flux for the desoldering. Most likely your solder does not even get hot enough and thus will not come off. Tin your soldering tip use flux and the braid and it will remove the solder. You do need both, flux and the wick/braid. It is actually not a terrible complicated job with the right tools. Practise on an old board and you'll be surprised how quickly it will work.

Thanks alot my friend.

I'll buy some flux and I wish you a wonderful day.

I recently attempting desoldering for the first time on a USB B port on an audio interface. Even with normal (the one that came with the iFixit soldering workstation) desoldering braid I couldn't get the solder off. I purchased some new desoldering braid with flux in it, is that definitely going to work now? I was researching around during this, and found some people using a thing called a desoldering pump. Is that something that works good and would be worth investing in?

@ezra all you need is a good braid and plenty of flux as well as the right heat. a lot of practice will help as well. Try it first on a board that you do not need. You will need to learn when it is to hot and destroy your solder pads or when it is to cold and you will pull the solder pads of with the component. Desoldering pumps are cumbersome and will not work as easy as youtube videos make it look.

It is hard to desolder with soldering iron. You can only desolder using heat gun facing on top of the component with tweezer holding the component to remove.
