Infrared in remote intermittently not working with TV

The past few weeks, our Vizio remote has worked intermittently. Sometimes it works fine, other times it doesn't work at all. We checked the remote with a camera, and it is putting out the signal. A universal remote also doesn't work during the time the Vizio remote stops working, so it appears to be the TV not receiving the signal properly. The buttons on the TV still work it when the remote is in one if it's non-working times. We have done the recommended steps by Vizio - change batteries, power cycle remote & TV, check for other infrared interference (including direct sunlight). We recently moved into a newly built house, which is coincidentally when the problems started occurring. Any ideas?

It's model #M470SV. Does the back of the TV need to come off in order to check the IR receiver connection?

We had a digital photo frame below the sensor. Turned off the photo frame and the remote worked better. Could be the TV was busy processing the interference from the photo frame being a flickering light source (60 hz) so close by.

Hi @lshiny ,

Check the IR receiver connection in the TV. It may have come loose or is not seated properly (depending on connection type) because of the house move.

Also could you verify the model number of the TV? I realize that you have specified it but perhaps your model wasn't listed as an option. It has happened in the past ;-)

Update (02/28/2018)

Hi @lshiny ,

Yes.

Disconnect the power and most probably all the other cords as well (take a picture of the connections before you disconnect them, if you have a lot of cords there) and remove the back cover.

The IR board will be behind the "dark window" found below the screen on the left side at the front of the TV. The window is not being partially obscured by any chance?

Well, nothing was loose, and I went ahead and cleaned the sensor with cotton & alcohol just in case, but that didn't help either. In doing further online research, it appears the sensor in this particular Vizio TV has a history of going out. So now that I'm familiar with taking it apart, it looks like I might as well just order a new sensor. Thanks for your help!

Hi @ Mary Higgins,

Have you checked the batteries are OK in the remote?

Use a digital camera or the camera in a mobile phone to test if the remote is working OK or not.

Turn on the camera and then view the remote control unit through the LCD screen of the camera. Face the remote control end which is normally pointed to the TV towards the camera.

Press and hold any button on the remote and you should see a light flashing from the IR LED at the end of the remote, when looking at it through the LCD screen

Try the Power button and the Volume buttons to see if they work.

They may not work while other buttons do. This is because they are the most "popular" buttons, i.e. they are used more than the others.

If all the buttons don't work then the remote may be faulty (see battery note above).

If only some buttons don't work, their contacts may be dirty or worn out through use.

Here's a link that shows how to clean the contacts in a remote control.

It is not for your exact model, but the principle is the same.

I recently had an issue like this when we plugged the tv in an outlet outside for community event downtown and while we could power the tv on, it was very slow to respond to the remote and would never load the menu. It had always worked fine inside but I wondered if for some reason we had a “dirty power” issue. We finally moved back to another outlet and it worked ok. Can you have problems with a remote caused by bad power issues?

Hello,

We’ve had a Vizio Tv for at least 10 yrs, we had the same problems you have been having, we also purchased a universal remote control and nothing seemed to work with the codes given, we discovered it may be the IR Sensor on the TV itself, so I opened the back of the TV using a screw driver and the sensor on the right side of the TV was dirty, some what smudged, I cleaned it with a q-tip and alcohol, and tried the remote prior before putting the TV back together and the remotes all worked perfectly fine.

Try this, It may solve your problem.

This may be of value or not. The remote works sometimes and at others it partially works or not at all. My series 32” has no buttons so I just unplug it and leave off over night. So far it has worked in the morning 5 times.

I have used two different controllers with same results so I feel it is not the controller. I have a 3 year warranty via Walmart so I will just return it to them but if I did not I would replace the IR sensor and carefully inspect the printed circuit boards for bad solder joints (this has worked on past Vision TV’s)in the area of the IR Sensor.

I hope this adds something to this thread.

I bought a Visio 48” Black Friday TV. I believe I figured out the problem with the remote not working. The Visio I have I took the back off- be careful if you do this as there are wires connected to the tv and the TV’s back panel. Where the IR Sensor is there is a ribbon circuit. It came loose and there is also a small clip that locks the ribbon in place. From mounting it on the wall my hand in that area may have loosened it. But when I opened the back of the TV the clip was not holding the ribbon in place and it just popped out. I carefully put it in place and locked the clip. So far the remote is working and it has been months! I was using my phone as a remote. I am going to try not to touch that area of the TV and hopefully this won’t happen again. Visio kept having me cycle the remote- check batteries blah blah blah. I knew that wasn’t the problem. Thanks everyone for your posts- you all helped me figure this out.

I am having the same problem. I have tested the remote and even used other remotes.Resetting stuff like everyone tells you won't help this. This was a refurbished 48"Vizio purchased in 2011.It has been doing this for a long time. If you wait a while it will start working again. Very odd problem.I have repaired lots of TV's and probably could diagnose it if it were always dead.It has been getting worse lately, though.
