Hello Donna,
It sounds like there is likely debris in your charger port such as pocket lint or dirt or hair.
No specially tool is required to clean it. A fine dental pick, very fine tweezers, or even a toothpick can all be used to pull debris out of the port.
However, there is risk of damaging the frigile pins inside the port if you cannot see what you are doing. With 20/20 vision you still won't be able to see those pins very well. I would wait until you can get access to magnification , such as a 10x zoom or higher microscope. With magnification, this cleaning job is unbelievably easy and safe to perform.

Spot on what i was about to write it down :)
Btw lighting cable contacts oxidises from poor connection caused from dust . Contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol works well.
