Thanks jayeff for the reply, apologies for delay.. All your remarks duly noted and of course appreciated, it did cross my mind that because of the difference in reception , that certain channels were not as strong as others.

By the way the antenna is pointing to Sutton Coldfield here in the midlands (UK) , no set top box, straight application.. Since the past post,! I decided to re-tune the Samsung TV , to attempt a sort of re-set, strangely enough, the main culprit channel, (19) among others, seems quite normal again, ! 'fingers crossed' .

However, poor connections , will still be on my suspect list, and I will get the antenna system checked, some time soon. Thank you again, for your interest , and sound advice.. Best wishes to you and yours.

Why is channel 9 breaking up on SONY & SAMSUNG TV ?

@Gloria Jackson ,

What is the source of the signal connected to the TV, direct connection from an antenna or a "box" of some description?

Use the TV's inbuilt signal strength meter (look in the settings or check the user manual for location in the TV settings (or the "box's settings) and compare the signal strength to other channels.

It may be a faulty lead connection that can affect some channels and not others. Also check that the antenna dipoles are all OK and not bent or missing

I don't get it my TV antenna was working fine at 3:00 am but as soon as the sun started to come up myTV started getting the little squares on all the channels it doesn't make any sense what so ever

Hi,

How do you get the TV channel signals, direct via a TV antenna or an input connection via a "box" to an antenna or cable?

If via an antenna have you checked that the existing antenna is in good condition and is pointed in the correct direction with regard to where the TV transmitters are?

Check the signal level for your channels. You may need a new antenna or antenna lead and possibly a masthead amplifier as well if the signal level is too low or on the threshold for some channels but not for others.

If connected via a "box" what make and model number is it? Check its' User guide to see if it has a signal level menu option as well.

Same thing in the afternoon around 4:00 pm my TV starts getting the little squares on all the channels you should not have to move your antenna all the time . My TV has a signal meter built in it there is no signal or it has 5 bars the stations that have 3-5 signal bars never breaks up weak stations only have 1 signal bar those are the ones that I have trouble with. If they can't afford to put out a strong signal then they have no business being on the air in the first place !

Hi @lestersmith1257,

Is this a new TV for you and if so did the problem occur with the old TV?

What is the make and model number of the TV?

How do you receive the signals for the TV channels, direct via an antenna or via a "box" e.g. PVR, of some description?

If via a “box’, what is the make and model number of the ‘box”

Have you checked the signal levels of the channels using the TV (or "box's”) inbuilt signal level meter - most have this provision somewhere in the menu options?

If all the signals are low, check the location of the TV transmitter in your area and make sure that the aerial is pointed directly towards the broadcast transmitter.

Also check for any nearby obstructions such as tall trees or any new high building that are in a direct line between the TV transmitter and you antenna that may be interfering with the signal.

Is your antenna high enough?

If it is and you have checked that the antenna is in good condition and that all the connections between the antenna and the TV (or the "box') are OK and you still get low level signals (remember the higher the -ve dB value the lower the signal level if the level is represented in dB, most just show 0-100 so the higher the better) you may need to get a masthead amplifier to boost the signal.

Are the channels breaking up all the time or only perhaps when an appliance has started up, e.g. a refrigerator or an air conditioner or even a faulty CFL light which may be emitting strong EMR which is being picked up by the antenna and which interferes with the TV signal?

Sometimes if I open a window close to the TV it will cause the little squares to start when I close the window it fixes it and the antenna is 10 ft away from the window I open.

@Richard Moren ,

What is the model number of the TV?

Have you checked if it has a signal strength indicator setting in the menus somewhere so that you can view the signal strength and signal quality of the signals being received by the TV for the different channels?

Usually you have to select one TV channel in each channel "group" i.e. all channels belonging to the same network e.g. here we have CH 9 , 91, 92 94 95 97 etc and the CH 7, 72, 73 etc if you get the drift about grouping) and note the information from the signal indicator. Then do it for all channel groups to see if all are about the same or if some are lower than others.

It may be that you will have to locate the TV transmission towers relative to your location and point the indoor antenna towards it and watch the signal indicator to see when you get the maximum signal when slowly moving the antenna around. If there is more than one tower for the different channels then you may have to compromise to get the best possible for each channel and not have pixellation occur.

If still no good you may have to consider an indoor antenna amplifier -example only to boost the signal

Im having the same problem, tv stations come and go....but only on 1 tv!

My other 2 tvs get all stations?

Couldvit still be a problem w the antenna?

This is more than likely due to your aerial, than any other factor. If it is a digital TV, then one of the down sides is that the picture and sound signals a sent separately instead of together like the old analogue units.

So you either need a good indoor digital aerial or a quality outdoor aerial.

Hi Vin,

Possible simple solution:

Had this problem and corrected it by upgrading indoor 75Ω coaxial cable from standard RG59 to RG6 .

RG6 just has better shielding than RG59

Check what cable you currently have. Should be very faintly printed on the outer

Maybe you could do this all the way from the antenna .

Hello, sm_vulus, and to you also jayeff, .Trust it's OK to answer you both in the one post. You both touched on the one and only thing I had in mind, the 'antenna', . But I was a bit puzzled why only the odd channel, and not all channels ?.Since you both pointed to this , then without doubt , at the moment, I will indeed get the antenna connections checked ! Can only assume that winter has caused problems ,

Many thanks to you both for your replies and suggestions Best wishes vin roberts

Hi,

To hopefully answer your question of "...why only the odd channel..."

There may be several factors in play.

As I suggested, check the signal level of all the channels. You may find that the "affected' ones have a lower signal level then the others. This could be caused by things such as that they are being broadcast from a different transmitter than the others and that there may be something in the direct line of sight between it and your antenna reducing the signal level, e.g. a tall building or even a small hill could do it. Your antenna may have been pointed in the direction which gives optimum levels from "all" the transmitters rather than what may be able to be achieved if it was pointed at only the one.

It could also be that the antenna dipoles relating to the particular frequency for the "faulty' channel may not have a good connection with the beam of the antenna etc., and as you correctly stated get the antenna cable connections checked (both ends) as a faulty connection may affect one frequency more than another.

Thanks again jayeff, sorry for the delay in replying. All your suggestions and comments duly noted.Last night I re-tuned the Samsung TV , and strangely enough ALL channels appear to be 'normal' ! However ,I will still suspect a bad connection somewhere in the antenna and feed line (co-ax) and get is checked out,, Many thanks for your helpful advice ,. My best wishes, to you and yours
