Powers up but no start chime & blank screen

Mac Mini G4 powers up, light comes on, hard drive spins, etc... No start chime and nothing on the screen. Could there be a reset or something I am missing? This happened after an Apple software update on the restart.

Thanks Adam, but no go. It takes in the DVD just fine, but still no chime and nothing on the screen.

Try holding down the 'c' key while booting with the DVD in.

I would at first guess that this is a software problem. Have you tried booting from the OS DVD?

If you can do that successfully, use the Disk Utility application (detailed instructions here) to check the disk and disk permissions.

If that fails, try using TechTool or DiskWarrior or some other program (I hope you have one of these, they are essential tools) and try to find the problem that way.

Barring that, I don't know what could be going on. Just make sure no keys / mouse buttons are being pressed on startup; this can cause some STRANGE problems that you wouldn't expect, and an inadvertent key press can cause a lot of troubleshooting pain (I speak from personal experience on this).

Let me know how this works!

+ I totally agree with using Disk Utility here. Are you running 10.5 or 10.6?

Thanks Mayer. It is a G4 so it's 10.5.8. Will have to get a wired Mac keyboard to try the "c" key trick as the only one I have here now is wireless. Since it was working perfectly until that last software update and restart that didn't, I too hope this is software or maybe PRAM related.

Did it do this immediately after the 10.5.8 update? I ask because it's been out a while. Also try starting holding down the "S" key.
