What are the different inertial sensor in the iPad 2 3G?

Good morning everyone,

I am currently working on an algorithm that uses iPad 2 inertial sensors. I learn a lot reading the iPad 2 teardown made by iFixit.

Yet I still have some questions :

>> The iPhone 4 have 3 accelerometers, 3 gyrometers and 3 accelerometers. What about the iPad 2 3G?

>> I understand that the iPad 2 has ST Microelectronics MEMS and I found the accelerometers thanks to the reference given in the teardown (LIS331DLH). Yet it is impossible to find the gyrometer using the reference AGD8 210. Any ideas why?

>> Finally, what about the magnetic sensor (compass)? Does the iPad has ones? Is it a three axis compass or only a one axis? What is the reference of this MEMS?

Thanks a lot for your help. I need these informations in order to develop an inertial filter and I need to know what informations I will be able to use.

Have a good day.

Laurent

Hi Laurent,

I'm very interested with programming a navigation algorithm using Kalman filter with all available sensors. Apparantly iPad 2 has 3-axis accelerometers, 3-axis gyroscopes and GPS (3G version).

I'm currently using Asus Eee Pad, pretty cool, it has quite some apps that can extract sensors data, GPS, 3-axis accelerometers, 3-axis gyroscope, 3-axis magnetometers ...

Hi Kyle,

Thank you for your response.

I am still working on the same problematic but since my question, we bought an iPad2 and started working on it. It appears that the iPad 2 has 3-axis sensors of all kind : 3-axis accelerometers, 3-axis gyros and 3-axis magnetometers (or compass) wich is perfect for the implementation of a Kalman filter for attitude estimation.

Apps like "sensor monitor" on iPad/iPhone allows to catch in real-time all these datas (and also GSP) meaning that iOS SDK allows a direct access to original datas. The developper then has to implement his algorithm, like a Kalman filter.

I started to develop on the iPad thanks to softwares like Unity or Airplay.

Hi Laurent,

Sorry for my late response. Would you need help in implementing a Kalman filter (or higher order filter) for all the available sensors in iPad 2? I'd certainly be interested to help out of interest. Please email me at emf.gauss@gmail.com if you are interested.

Thanks,

Kyle.
