Display is gone but can still faintly brighten the dark screen

I am trying to troubleshoot whether or not to replace my whole LCD display. It seems my display went dark after an update to 10.6.7.

Here are the symptoms:

Even though I have no display, I can brighten and darken the dark screen. I assume the back light is still working.

I can use an external monitor. I believe that rules out the graphics chip.

I can share the screen.

Computer still operates normally otherwise.

Has there been an issue with this latest update? Seems to much of a coincidence.

What would be the recommended course of action to take and test before replacing the expensive LCD unit.

Please forgive my ignorance. I am having some problems comprehending exactly what is going on with your laptop's screen and it's ability to produce a viewable image. You state you can brighten and darken the dark screen. Does that mean that there is no image on the screen and you can make the screen go from a blank black screen to a blank white screen? Please define that better for me. You state that it went dark after an update. Would you please elaborate on this issue. Time frame etc...

Can you see the desktop?

I can affect the screen slightly with F2 and F1. There is no image. Basically it looks like there is a back-light functioning. The screen does not go to white. I had the screen up for a little bit after the update, then it went down. I cannot see the desktop even with the flashlight test.

Sounds like your inverter may have failed. It could also be the inverter cable. Move the display up and down and see if you get any change. If so, we'll lokk at replacing the cable. If not, then go to replacing the inverter. Here's the pdf on how: MacBook Pro 17" Models A1151 A1212 A1229 and A1261 Inverter/Antenna Cables Replacement

UPDATE

Since you can't see a desktop, the inverter may be fine. Just to make sure this isn't a software problem, start up from your system installation disk by holding down the "C" when booting from it. If it works then we have a software issue. If it fails, then we'll look at the Display Data Cable.

Replaced the data cable. Still just the backlight, no display

does it light up as bright as it does when on a black screen. if it does it sounds like the lcd screen isn't receiving power from the graphics card. this could be a cable problem or the screen could have just burnt out. this could also be just a simple driver problem.

See if you can roll back the update to the previous one and see what happens. i recommend this first though.

I will roll back the update to see if that solves anything. I'm not sure how to do that, but will google and report back

I booted up from install disk. No change.

I (might) be having the same problem. My screen is quite dark when I first open the computer. Then it slowly gets brighter. This was after a change to OS 10.6.7. My computer screen still works in that I can still use it (not totally dark like yours).

Anyway, I went into the preferences/monitors and deselected "automatically adjust brightness as ambient light changes." I just did it but am hopeful this was my problem. Totally guessing here, but if your computer is in a bright place maybe it is self-dimming to an extreme amount.
