Why did my Desktop Icon change?

have a Macbook Pro laptop that is running High Sierra 10.13.5, and I have noticed that the alias I use on my desktop for the VideoDownloadhelper, called Dwhelper, has become 2 separate icons on the desktop now….

One of them looks like a folder icon, and the other looks like a text document icon, and the folder icon has changed its name to Dwhelper 2, while the text one is named Dwhelper. Can someone pease explain this to me, as it happened at the same time as a large chunk of my hard drive space disappeared??

Can I delete one of these folders, or both of them safely, and just make a new alias folder for the desktop??
