The Early 2009 Mac Pro—also known as the Mac Pro 4,1—introduced Intel's Nehalem architecture to Apple's line of professional desktop computers in March 2009. The Mac Pro 5,1 used the same interior design but received further CPU updates in 2010 and 2012.

Is there a way to add PCI to Thunderbolt

Need fast backup to External Thunderbolt storage drive. Does anyone know of a card or other way to do this? On either a 1st generation or 2nd generation Mac Pro.

UPDATE 9/15/18

Looks like Sonnett makes them but I can’t tell if they work in Macs:

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: Thunderbolt is essentially PCIe on a wire which means that it HAS to be part of the motherboard, so what you're asking for here is a way to install a PCIe interface via a PCIe interface. Can't be done, at least not without the motherboard directly supporting it (which the Mac Pros do not).

There are PCI cards to add TB to a Windows PC so its technically possible. I just don't know if any one has done it and how they addressed the driver issue. As an example HP 1-port Thunderbolt Adapter with DisplayPort Input - PCI Express - Plug-in Card - 1 Thunderbolt Port(s)

This is the older TB not TB2 or now TB3

As I said, "at least not without the motherboard directly supporting it". To use a Thunderbolt PCI card on a Windows PC, the PC motherboard has to support it. None of the Mac Pros support it.

Just because a computer has a PCI slot doesn't automatically mean that you can plug any PCI card in there and it'll work.
