Dead KM742 laptop battery

I have a Dell latitude E5510 laptop with a dead battery -- as soon as I unplug the AC power, the laptop dies immediately.

I would like to disassemble the battery pack, to see if it has easily-replaceable parts inside, thereby saving me money on a new battery. But I can't figure out how to get it open. Does anyone have any experience with opening a laptop battery pack and replacing the parts inside?

If I need to buy a new battery, the only one I have found that I trust the quality of is sold by Duracell for $49. Everything I have found on Amazon or Ebay is around $10, and I don't trust the quality of these batteries. I can't even find this battery on the Dell website. Does anyone know where I can get a good-quality KM742 battery at a reasonable price?

Thanks.

Hi!

To open up a battery you should only need prying tools, just remove the plastic covers. The only things that you will find inside are the battery's cells that have a cable tied and soldered to them and a PCB where they all come together. You can find only the cells, but I am not sure if you can buy that link between them (and soldering it yourself is a no-go - the fire hazard is immense - battery cells + soldering iron can only end bad). That PCB also needs to be powered at all times, because if it looses power it won't be useable again (at least mine did that - I only found out after the fact).

Therefore the best solution is to get a new battery. I would also get the Duracell if I were you, I wouldn't want some cheap junk in my laptop.

Amazon Germany seems to have the original OEM part, but it's quite expensive at 90€: https://amzn.to/2AltdRv

That is a very helpful answer.

I feared that I wouldn't be able to replace some of the parts inside of the battery pack. Still, perhaps I can use some sort of cold solder, to avoid the fire hazard. It won't hurt to have a look inside the pack, if I can get it open.

Thanks for your reply.
