Barrel/tub locked in place

I have a front-load Frigidaire Affinity washer #FAFW3801LW5 where the tub/barrel/drum will not turn even if you try and turn it with your hand. There’s just no give to it.

I recently spoke to the repair guy from the store that it was purchased from and, without looking at it, he believes that the issue is with the transmission. Stating that it was due to being moved without using moving bolts. He stated that it was fixable, but would cost $800 to fix.

But is this true, or are there other possible causes? And could I possibly fix it myself? As I hate to think that I’d have pay a lot of money I don’t have to get it fixed.

I do not think your washer even has a transmission. It’s directly driven by the motor via a belt.

Consider to take a look at this by removing the cabinet etc. Remove the belt and see if you can turn the tub. this video should help you out. Yes, no matter what, you can most certainly repair this washer yourself.

I can’t take the belt off. It’s too tight to slide off.

Never mind. I got it off.

@shorai can you rotate the drum by the pulley?

I managed to remove the belt without doing any damage. The motor wheel moves fine. Real smooth turn in either direction. The large pulley wheel is what’s locked up.

@shorai in that case it is most likely your tub bearing. Cheaper than a new transmission but a pain to get to it.

If the stainless steel basket inside the washer will not turn, it could be bound up by a bad spin bearing. Pull the belt off and see if the motor pulley will turn okay without any resistance. With the belt still removed, try to spin the drive pulley on the back of the outer tub. If this pulley will not turn then the spin bearing is bad and the back half of the outer tub (that has the spin bearing pressed into it) will need to be replaced.

If this is the case, how easy would it be for me to replace it?

May is probably right, but it’s not a car. I mean you could easily take the whole thing apart. Automotive repair is such a hassle do to lack of accessibility and things are sometimes big and/or heavy.
