DO NOT BUY VIZIO TVs. D50U-D1. Sudden Black Screen. Panel Defect.
The screen on my Vizio D50u-D1 went black a few days ago. Sound went off too. This strange purple ring has now appeared in the lower right corner (when facing the tv). It's made up of tiny dots. Can I post a photo? We removed the back and all boards look fine as do capacitors and the only fuse we see. I went up and down the source list using the old remote and suddenly got sound but then lost it when I hit the channel button? The screen went black while I had the old remote in my hand. Could it possibly just be a messed up remote setting or something I did while it was in my hand. The remote was pretty much falling apart from falling off my desk so many times so I'm wondering if it's the cause. I purchased a new remote and now the tv screen has backlight and the purple ring. It's not a spot! It's a perfect ring made up of tiny purple dots. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! UPDATE: I received your response oldturkey. Thank you SO MUCH for helping me. Here’s a photo of the ring. I can post photos of the boards if that will help.

@kimtr
thanks for those pictures. Darn that is a weird situation. When the screen shows a regular picture, what does it look like inside this circle? How big is the circle? Any chance you can post a picture of what the screen shows overall?

Thanks again for trying to help me!
Should add: This TV is hanging 7' off the ground so there's no way for it to get damaged. The only thing hooked up to it is an iptv box (Mag 245) that is used occassionally. I had HULU on when all this happened.
As I stated, the screen is black, no picture, no light EXCEPT when I use the remote and change the source.I can't see any menus or anything but I know the remote button process to scan the sources etc...
When I'm on, what I'm assuming is the correct source, I suddenly get back light. Then, if use the remote again and bring up the app selections icons (Hulu, Amazon Prime etc...) that pop ups on the bottom of the screen and go through them, the sound suddenly comes back on when I get on one particular app. I can't see which app it is however but I know it isn't an app I loaded. Whatever it is it's continuous music with a sort of coming attractions advertising every once in awhile. Stock app that came with the TV? Is it even an app? Is it a Comcast XFINITY thing? I'm clueless.
While on the correct source and this particular app, I can see the back light moving as it would when something is playing and the sound is on but I can't see anything except the weird thing that was a purple ring in the lower corner (it has since changed!).
As I stated, all of this happened when I had the remote in my hand a few days ago and was simply moving it. Did I accidentally push a bunch of remote buttons at the same time and screw something up royally? Could it be a coincidence that my TV happened to "die" while I was holding the remote OR could it possibly be that that's all it is is some sort of messed up remote settings situation?
As for the purple ring, it's no longer a ring! It totally changed and looks different from different angles and it's only visible when I'm on the (I assume) correct source where the back light comes on. Otherwise, if I change sources and the screen is black, no back light, the thing in the corner is not visible. SEE LATEST PICS. thanks!

My Vizio just went out this morning. Apparently it caught fire in the corner or got extremely hot. It's not even 3 years old yet. Nothing can be done since it's out of warranty.

Same issue arrive for me yesterday. The TV has been plagued by random picture freezes since we purchased it, but this is new. Started as a small spot and within 30 minutes it went from a few random artifacts, lines on the screen, to this circle and now no picture. At first I though it was a cable issue, but changing the cable did nothing and there is no picture now from the built-in apps either. When you look at the display and the frame around it, you can see there is heat discoloration and it looks like the LCD actually cracked, plus the frame on the outside by the logo is melted. This is not an impact or surge issue, its a manufacturing issue with the D50U-D1, mine is also less than 3 years old. Luckily I caught the full failure with my camera so others can be aware. I hope Vizio has improved their manufacturing process. Here is a link to 4 pics of it slowly finding its grave. https://snag.gy/KtIZUf.jpg

My t.v did the same this morning. Except it's right where the power comes on. And it seems to have caught a small fire or over heated. The plastic is warped as if melted.
