LCD Display backlight issue, Can be seen by dropping a torch

My 13” MacBook Pro 2017 (with Touch Bar) got display outage suddenly. The backlight wasn't lighting up (the desktop & its icons could faintly be seen with a torchlight). Connecting to an external display did work.

I tried SMC & NVRAM Reset, neither helped! I contacted Apple Support, after some talks they recommended to reinstall macOS. Didn't work either!

My warranty just ran out 1-2months ago.

In this condition whats your recommendation? FYI: my system didn't get dropped or get wet as far as I am concerned.

I then contacted iService (in Bangladesh) Apples’ authorized reseller, but not very good at service. We don't have any Apple Store/genius bar in our country. After some diagnosis, they found out it’s the display & will take 48kBDT(570$+) to replace + Their diagnosis charge.

But the problem is, I can't trust their diagnosis (There are numerous online resources suggests it can be the logic board, or the display or the ribbon cable).

If after spending ~50k+ (600USD) the iService guys tell me that it was logic board that will be a great frustration!

Your problem is a ribbon cable connection of the LED backlight circuit. Here’s a photo explaining the connections:

If you can you could try cleaning the connection surfaces and reconnect the connector. Using 85% or better isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab (Q-Tip) wipe the gold contacts.

Here’s the guide you’ll need to follow to pull the bottom cover Remplacement de boîtier inférieur du MacBook Pro 13" avec touches de fonction fin 2016 And yes, this is for a different model than yours it’s the same procedure!

If that doesn’t work you’ll need a new display assembly as the cable its self has a tendency to fail. Apple had been getting a lot of cable failures in all of the new 2016 thru 2017 models. Both the 13 & 15” models share the same display design. Sadly, the cabled are mounted permanently to the display and can’t be replaced on their own.

If you can, on one of your travels get to a real Apple Store and let them fix it so you have a proper record of the repair as I do believe Apple will be offering a rebate for people who had the display replaced. You might even try getting then to post a warranty exception as this is so common a failure and then it would be a free repair. Sorry to say the display is that expensive ;-{

That q-tip didn't fix my product. So I guess I'll have to replace the display I guess.
