Secrets and advice on using an iOpener to get the glass off?

Hi there…

I’m attempting to replace the battery in my beloved iPad Air 2 and I can’t get any further in the process than trying to get the glass off. I’m on my 2nd iOpener after blowing the first one up in the microwave, and I’ve had the heated iOpener on the glass for up to 10 minutes and the glass has never budged.

I’ve pulled to the point that the suction cup pops off… nothing. Trying to use a spludger to pull down on the metal part of the case while pulling up… nothing. The how-to videos and pictures make it seem like this will magically happen, but it clearly doesn’t work that way.

For people who have successfully used an iOpener to do this … did it work that simply for you? Did you have to do something else to get this to work? Any other guides, pictures, or videos help?

TIA

Karl

Same issue happened for me. Tried to open up my original iPad Air and the screen wouldn’t budge. Used an iOpener and did all the steps correctly. Didn’t budge. The repairability on these machines suck, at a 2 out of 10.

I’ve never used an iOpener but before I purchased a heat mat, I was using a magic bag, which is a similar but larger version (plus you can use it on aching muscles :>). The advantage to this is that it covers the whole iPad and transfers more heat. You need to get the adhesive up to ~60C to really soften it up. The other option is to use a heat gun but you have to be careful with those as they can pump out a lot of heat.
