Mac pro screen goes purple, black, gets hot, and doesn’t respond.

My macbook pro will start up fine( most of the time), but randomly my screen will go complete purple or green, sometimes with stripes, and then goes black. The computer is still on, but it’s completely unresponsive. It’s also very hot.

One time the screen went straight black, and just beeped, without a pattern, until I did a forced shut-down.

I also know that this started happening within the past week, before that I noticed my computer would turn on while sleeping in my backpack and overheat and be non-responsive with a black screen.

what could be wrong with it??

Sounds like your problems are heat related so let’s go after that first.

Take the screws out of the bottom cover, boot up and check to see if the fans are running.

Next shut it down. Look closely around the end of the heat sink where it is crimped shut. You are looking for an dry oily stain on the logic board indicating the heat sink has leaked.

Next lets change out the thermal paste:

Hey Colton,

The first thing I would try would be resetting the SMC (System Management Controller). The SMC detects if your MacBook Pro’s lid is closed and it also controls your thermal management system and your battery on your MacBook Pro. The signs that show you may need to reset the SMC on your device are the following:

  • Your MacBook Pro was closed but was still turning on.
  • Your MacBook Pro gets very hot.

Hope that was helpful! Please comment if you have any questions or comments about this post.
