Lithium Ion battery caught fire. How to properly store?

During a iPhone 7 battery replacement, the adhesive snapped so I stupidly tried to pry the battery out. The battery caught on fire and create a small flame which was quickly put out.

I have since then found a 5 gallon bucket and buried the device in sand and closed the lid. I will try and drop it off at a hazardous waste location tomorrow.

Until then, am I storing it correctly? Anything else I should do to prevent it from catching on fire again?

Proper storage of a ruptured li-ion battery would be to put it in a metal bucket with a secure lid and then to bury it with sand, just in case a fire starts again. Get that battery to a hazardous waste facility ASAP to protect you and your property from damage!

Where are you off to to do this surfing? I started SCUBA diving at your age. Ended up going all over the Caribbean.

@mayer if you are talking about the surfing in Mexico I will be surfing in the Bahia de Banderas in Nuevo Vallarta, Jalisco, MX.

@ajcooke01 a great place to get started https://travel.padi.com/d/puerto-vallart...

It will totally change where you vacation for the rest of your life.

@mayer Cool! Unfortunately for me my parents are paranoid to leave the resort area to do any of this stuff because “anywhere outside of the resort is unsafe and we could get kidnapped or killed or held hostage”. Kinda an irrational fear, but justifiable at the same time. I cannot convince them to think otherwise... got any ideas?

heaps of resorts offer in-house courses. My friend used to be a PADI instructor for a resort... you learn in the pool and then they take you to the closest reef, all with resort staff. You used to have to be 16 to do scuba in open water, pool or introductory courses are for younger people. I had openwater2..with NAUI(similar to PADI)
