How permanently stop GE microwave beeping?

I just had a JVM3160DF4WW GE microwave oven installed. To my horror, there appears to be no simple way to turn off all blasted beeping forever.

It looks like the only option is to disassemble it and cut the wire to the beeper. Is that the case? If so, any tips about doing that? I have seen some YouTube videos on disassembling GE microwaves as well as videos on disconnecting the beeper (do GE microwaves use a standard beeper?).

Also, I hear that the capacitor can remain charged. What is the best way to be sure it is discharged? Can’t I just unplug the microwave some time beforehand and give it time to discharge? If so, how long beforehand to be safe?

Thank you for whatever advice you can provide.

Actually, the answers for this model are not correct. For model JVM3160DF4WW there is no way to disable with the keypad. It must be disassembled and the speaker detached. Here is how I did it. Remove the unit from the wall. Remove screws from the top, bottom, and back. NOTE: You will need a special security bit to remove some screws from the back. Remove the front upper grill. Remove the bottom. Carefully lift off the top/sides unit. Avoid touching anything but the parts behind the circuit board. Using a flat head screw driver, carefully pry off the round/flat object (speaker) from the back of the circuit board. All you need to disconnect is one side of the speaker. Reassemble the unit. All sound is disabled. (NOTE: if you're not certain which part is the speaker, place a short piece of 1/4" tubing in your ear and listen around for the beep as you press the start button (unit plugged in). Again, be careful to not touch any other component in the oven; there is a high voltage capacitor that can be dangerous.

Thank you. I will try this as soon as the warranty expires (it already had to be repaired under warranty).

I would like to be sure that the capacitor is fully discharged before trying anything. I will try to find out how long that should take.

I am very unhappy with GE for not providing a normal way to turn off the beeper. It is simply wrong that we have to pay more to eliminate a "feature" we don't want.

Anyway, thanks again.

I just bought this Microwave. All I jad to do was unscrew the control panel which comes off with 3 screws, then without disconnecting anything and using a screwdriver - i was able to carefully bend the speaker UP slightly to expose it's 2 wires. I then simply pulled one off.

Re-assembled everything and Voila! - no sound.

I chose this method because I had seen some disassembly videos from Repair Clinic and knew I could get the control panel off.

Secondly - I didnt remove the speaker so there was no risk of damaging the board. The control panel can still send a signal to the speaker - it just won't activate because 1 of the wires isn't connected.

Thank you for taking the time to share this information. It is wonderful to hear that there is such a simple solution.

I moved so no longer have to suffer from that microwave model but I hope that someone else can benefit from your post.

Unplug unit from the outlet for at least 1 minute then plug it back in. This should reset the microwave and the time will need reset afterwards.

This failing, and it is under warranty, throw the breaker for now to stop it and call whomever you bought it from for repair or replacement.

UPDATE

How to Turn Off a Microwave Sound on a GE

  1. Press the "Beeper Volume" button, located on the microwave's control panel.
  2. Press the 0 to 3 buttons to choose the loudness setting. ...
  3. Press the "Start/Pause" button to save your settings.
  4. Method #2
  5. To mute your microwave, start by checking the control panel. Look closely. The mute function may be labeled as a secondary function of one of the standard buttons. Check these things first:
  6. Often, pressing and holding 10Stop or Cancel will either result in turning off the beeping sounds or activating a child lock feature. (Child lock doesn't actually lock the door, but instead locks the control panel so no buttons can be pressed until the lock is removed by holding the button for around three seconds again.)
  7. If none of these work, it's probably best to consult the manual. Even if you don't have a Sound button, there is no Mute function denoted as a secondary function or holding a button doesn't do anything, there is still a chance a mute function exists. It could be a button combination or, like on some microwaves, be buried in a submenu that's not at all obvious how to activate.
  8. If you've tossed the owner's manual to your microwave, check the manufacturer's website. They will often provide a digital version of the manual as a PDF for more recent models. For an older model, you may need to do some digging, but a great start is to just do a Google search for "[microwave brand and model number] manual."

Thank you, but I was not clear enough. I am not saying that it continuously beeps. The beeping is a "feature" not a bug. That is why, if it cannot be turned off on the keypad, the beeper needs to be physically disconnected.

Do you happen to know if this model can be turned off on the keypad somehow? If so, GE has cleverly hidden what to do.

Holding down 0 totally worked for me!! Thank-you! Now if only I can get the vent off or quieter when cooking.

I wish that worked on mine. It sounds like we are forced to pay more to be able to turn off those horrible sounds.

GE microwave model JES1384SF 08

My model doesn't have number buttons, it only has a knob to adjust the time.

But we're having the same issue here. With the CONTINUES BEEPING Non-Stop "After the microwave has finished" and is no longer cooking!! It's a reminder feature which I find absolutely annoying. Ridiculous that this feature can't just be an option that we can turn on or off when we desire to use/not use it. My husband is notoriously putting food or his coffee in the microwave. Then goes outside before it's done. completely forgetting he put something in the microwave. Then I have to stop what I'm doing (I work from home) to go and shut the loud annoying thing up. It beeps every dang minute after it has finished cooking! If anyone has an answer to stop this function (without completely disabling the beeping. I'm ok with the ONE, I'm finished beep) please please let me know. Again I have a knob and no numbered buttons on our model. My email is

Thank you so much in advance.

Hi @Jessica Lara,

You may be out of luck

According to the user manual for the oven, on p.16 it states:

Cooking Complete Reminder: To remind you that you have food in the oven, the oven will beep once a minute until you either open the door or press PAUSE/CLEAR.

There is no option to disable this feature, mentioned in the manual.

You may either have to physically disable the speaker in the oven, which you said that you didn’t want to do or convince your husband to stay within earshot of the oven until it has finished operating.
