Why is my MacBook Pro making a clicking, snapping noise?

Hello all,

Intermittently, this 13” 2016 MBP (Touch Bar) produces a sharp clicking sound, a metallic snap. It is not coming from the speakers, which are turned off; neither is it from the keyboard or touchpad.

Have noticed this most often (though not exclusively) while working in Final Cut Pro X. Seems to occur when the MBP is under load, such as during multi-layer compositing. It also happens, occasionally, after awakening the system.

The MBP was sent to Apple for diagnosis/repair. When it was returned, the Product Repair Summary did not indicate that any parts were replaced; it did state, however, that “…your diagnosed and repaired product now passes all hardware testing.” But upon powering up the unit, and opening a Finder window, we immediately heard the familiar metallic snap. Ugh, as we say.

Could this be a thermal issue, a piece of metal rapidly expanding from increased heat?

Is there a way to determine the cause and implement a fix?

Am frustrated that Apple did not to provide more diagnostic detail. I had spent a great deal of time sharing the specifics of the problem, even sending them a video of the clicking and snapping as it occurred during a recent edit session.

Looking forward to and appreciative of your feedback,

JLS

This was a common reported problem in this model. You’ll need to return the system back to Apple ASAP! As you want get it repaired again under the original repair warranty. It may take a few returns to get resolved.

Thanks for the info, Dan.

Any idea as to the underlying cause?

The thought was the uppercase or the Touch Bar was the issue. I never could get a straight answer from the genius's

This MBP has been in for repairs three times. Sadly, much as I like the machine, I must admit that it's a lemon.

At this point I think you need to set a fire under the support manager and Store manager as this won't do, time for a replacement system! If you don't get traction I would fire off a note to big Tim.

Too difficult (and distant) for us to get to a store; have been dealing with support via phone and email.

We’re beyond warranty, but would certainly appreciate help considering this units history. Doesn’t Apple follow their own “lemon-law” guidelines for situations like this.

Much as we prefer MacOS over the alternatives, can’t continue to recommend MBPs. Faulty keyboard, failed ports, loose battery, and now the snap-crackle-pop of utter frustration. It’s been quite a history.

As they say: “Sigh.”
