What are the Steps to Replace a Cracked Screen on an iPhone?

This is currently my screen replacement step by step strategy generally, not just for the iPhone 6, please advise if you would change, remove or add any steps to this list.

  1. If the cracked screen still works / lights up move to step 3
  2. If the cracked screen does not work, plug in to a power supply with an amp meter attached and see if the phone still draws amperage. Try switching the phone on if no current drawn. Current draw should not be more than 1 amp and should be stable after about 2 minutes. If current draw is ranging or there is no current draw, there is a board level problem and the screen replacement will not solve the problem.
  3. Take note of where the screen damage originated, there may be some frame / casing damage
  4. Switch off the phone, open it, disconnect the battery, remove the damaged screen
  5. Inspect the frame / casing to see if repair is possible. If possible proceed, if not replace the damaged screen if you can and return to the customer or explain the situation to the customer.
  6. Connect a replacement screen, reconnect the battery, turn on the phone and test if the replacement screen works. Observe boot looping and boot up time.
  7. If the phone boots normally, turn off the phone, disconnect the battery, disconnect the replacement screen and proceed with transferring the components from the old screen to the new screen, if not, there is a board level issue and a simple screen replacement will not solve the problem
  8. Once the components from the original screen have been transferred to the new screen, reconnect the new screen, connect the battery and start the phone. If the phone boots normally and the screen works as it should, go to step 10.
  9. If the phone is taking a long time to boot or boot looping or not starting t all, there may be a problem with either the proxy / front camera flex or the power button. Through a process of elimination try booting the phone by, independently disconnecting the proxy / front camera flex and / or the power button. If either or both the proxy / front camera flex and or power button are the problem replace and retest boot time. If neither of these solves the problem, the phone may have been damaged during repair. Ouch!!
  10. Turn the phone off. If necessary, disconnect the new screen and battery and repair the frame / casing, otherwise replace all securing brackets and close the phone.
  11. Turn on the phone and Test

It's all is very generic, there's already plenty of detailed professional guides for each iPhone model, it seems pretty useless unless.. trying to get visibility ?

par

Please point me in the direction of a specific guide that goes thorough the troubleshooting steps to ensure you waste as little time as possible.

What would be the point of getting visibility? You honestly think I would go to that length to get visibility

par

@drfixit_tech Put it up as a guide then, you're welcome. I don't see here any question, nor any answer that wasn't dealt with before. I would just archive it as not aswerable.

Well done, applause... you did not answer the question I asked. Let me repost it incase you did not see it...

"Please point me in the direction of a specific guide that goes thorough the troubleshooting steps to ensure you waste as little time as possible when doing a screen replacement.

Here is the question, which you also missed "please advise if you would change, remove or add any steps to this list."

I am a newbie, so not happy to post it as a guide yet

If you're a newbie don't act like an elephant into a crystals store. See how the site works, learn and respect the rules.Bye!

Hi Roland. Thanks for contributing your thoughts on troubleshooting an iPhone screen issue. However, IMHO this doesn't really belong on the Answers Forum.

You should write up your process in a "Technique" Guide (https://www.ifixit.com/Contribute) and then head over to Meta (meta.ifixit.com) to ask the regular contributors and TPTB to comment or critique.

I understand it's upsetting to get called out out but don't hold a grudge against @arbaman :>), he is one of our regular contributors here and he consistently volunteers multiple hours of his week in order to help out DIY fixers. For all of us that do this regularly, we see countless SPAM attacks, flagrant self-promoters and whatnot and it can get a bit tiring at times. Sometimes it's hard to differentiate those who are drive-by self promoters and those who genuinely want to help.

Teaching is a great way to learn so hopefully you will continue to contribute, either via guides or by providing answers. I'll keep this question aside for a few days to give you a chance to migrate it towards a guide. Eventually, it will probably need to be archived. In the meantime, lets see what @mayer thinks about this.

Thanks @refectio amazing what a bit of guidance can accomplish. Irrespective of how much @arbaman contributes, there is no need to carry on like he has. I will move it to a tech guide and then ask people to contribute.

par

@drfixit_tech Feel free to criticize my ways, I'm not easily offended. @refectio is a gentleman and is very patient, being an older man I do not have so much patience and I'm less tolerant to exploit attempts. I'll be very happy to apologize with you when I'll see you will be sincerely contributing to the primary iFixit forum goal. So far..

par

You got a big mouth, keep your apology, it means nothing. I am reluctant to contribute now, why would I waste my time, I will just be a taker like the rest. You are a typical keyboard warrior, all mouthy and brave, first to run and hide. The fact that you are even still allowed to be on this forum is a serous concern for how this site is managed. iFixit, so organised that there is not even an intro video on how to use the site???

par

Netiquette, @drfixit_tech , netiquette. This one was posted for students, first google search page: http://blogs.onlineeducation.touro.edu/1...

I'll quote n.1 point, it might help you..oops, sorry, forgot you are reluctant "now":

Before posting your question to a discussion board, check if anyone has asked it already and received a reply. Just as you wouldn’t repeat a topic of discussion right after it happened in real life, don’t do that in discussion boards either."

The other 14 rules might help you in real life too.

By the way..did you write your comment yourself or did you pick it from the stereotypes handbook ? I hardly see anything relevant..

par

Alright guys...no one is going to "win" this argument and it doesn't benefit the community at all. You're all lucky Mayer hasn't seen this yet :>).
