cloned hd to ssd, next installing it & ram, what about time machine?

should I use the external drive that I have had set up as the time machine back up since … long ago?

I would like to keep all my back ups on that same drive.

? can I expect any problems after the upgrade?

Any advice?

Don’t clone! Instead use your current TimeMachine backup or your copy off your stuff from your HDD to your new SSD via Migration Assistant! So here’s the details:

Setup a USB thumb drive as a bootable OS installer How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive I do recommend sticking with Sierra on the older MacBook Pro’s with SATA drives, HFS+ is better than APFS! On them. I don’t recommend High Sierra instead you’ll want to jump to Mojave but Apple doesn’t support it on this series you’ll need to use a hack to installed from DOS Dude1.

Get a StarTech 2.5" SATA to USB adapter cable (or something like it) so you can copy off your stuff from your current HDD.

Get a new MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable and yes! This it’s the one thats for the 2012 model as its better! Your current cable is not able to support the I/O data flow your new SSD can push and oftentimes the cable is worn as well.

You’ll want to follow this IFIXIT guide in replacing the cable Remplacement de la nappe du disque dur du MacBook Pro 13" Unibody mi-2012 and in addition add a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over to help protect it from the rough surface of the uppercase. And lastly very important! Don’t crease the cable! The sharp folds damage the thin foil wires inside, you want nice smooth arcs around the bends and corners. At this time take your old drive out and put the new one in.

With your USB installer format and install your OS onto your SSD

And lastly, plug in your old HDD via the SATA to USB cable and run Migration Assistant How to transfer your old Mac's data to your new Mac

Thanks for the suggestion on the cable. Should I get cable only (your link in body of reply) or the cable with bracket as shown in the guide just above.

I have already done the clone on the 1 tb ssd. I am running 10.11.8 El Cap and plan to stay with it... I think. After I am done with installing I want to do a bootcamp partition and migrate or ? from my 2008 mac book to the 2011 macbook pro (the one referenced in this question) Thanks for all the info, it may be a few more days & anything you send me I will study.

Once the 2011 mbp is done I also want to upgrade my 2008 unibody. with ssd & ram - any suggestions? Tried to find those same apple instructions for it but don't seem to find anything!

Oh, the question I had on time machine, can I use it seamlessly from the old hdd to the new ssd or would that make a mess? (not to migrate just to continue backing up on the same drive - from the same mbp only with new drive installed

Most cloning apps won't carry over the hidden partition. Make sure your's did before going to far here.

As far as appending Vs setting up a new TimeMachine backup. It depends! If you are using the same image from the original system with no changes then you can append (your cloned image may not work properly). Otherwise its time for a fresh backup.

Hi Dan! 3 things:

2011 MacBook Pro unibody (cloned before your suggestion) got it's 1tb ssd & 16gb ram installed today. It is much faster!!! (I didn't want to wait for a cable but if it will make a huge difference I will order it on your advice) Let me know what you think.

I hooked up the time machine external drive - it recognized it -- took a long time to prepare. Looks like the back up from the new ssd was successful. (no errors) Is there anyother way to tell?

I don't know what appending V's means.

And yes.... on a different Mac (2008) I am attempting everything I know to clone the bootcamp partition so I can move it to my now happy 2011. All that info is posted elsewhere... but boy could I use a solution to that!

Once you start stressing your drive you will likely face SATA cable failure. Its possible your system had its cable replaced so it has the newer one. I would still make the effort to replace it so its not a question later on and you don't get into a corrupted drive issue. Don't forget the tape! And not creasing (smooth arcs only).

Well it does sound like your TimeMachine backup is working just fine! It would have given you an error. Did you look at the images looking at an older one (before you swapped the drive) if you see it you are using the same image set (appending) Vs making a fresh image.
