Sounds like a problem with the proximity sensor. I have seen this happen when we worked on a device and had the proximity sensor seated incorrectly. Probably not what happened here unless you have repaired the phone or it has been dropped possibly. Restarting the phone should fix the problem temporarily until you make a call again. If that is the case, I would say it’s a problem with the proximity sensor.
