How do I replace the optical drive with an SSD and use SATA?

Hello, I’ve seen questions answered on how to replace the optical drive of a mid-2007 iMac with an SSD, but I haven’t seen any related to how to make use of the spare SATA port instead of the slow ATA 100 port. Any ideas?

Are we talking about the 20" EMC 2133 or 2210 model you've selected here?

It's the mid-2007 model, so I'm guessing it's the 2133 model.

Sadly, this series does not offer a spare SATA port on the logic board.

Your only option is to use a PATA to SATA converter unit which fits into the optical drive bay. As you know the PATA interface is quite slow!

Frankly, I would just replace the HDD with a SSD and use an external FireWire 3.5” HDD case to hold your current HDD.

Do keep an eye on the costs and the limits of this system. You don’t want to invest too much as it’s getting hard to get spare parts if something fails.

Yeah, I've been thinking about cost too - I cracked it open to clean it out and extract the non-functional Superdrive, and I can see how things could get expensive very quickly. I'll need to evaluate if spending $124 is worth upgrading the internal drive to an SSD. I wish I could get the kit without the tools, since I already have the ones I need!

You can get a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter frame for a few bucks if thats your issue. Here's one: 2.5" SSD/HDD Mounting Bracket for 3.5" Drive Bay - Tool-less Installation
