Problems upgrading from Macos Lion

So I bought this MacBook Air off eBay a little while ago, I’ve used Macs before but I’m more comfortable with PCs so please bare with my obvious errors.

Since it was a second hand computer I naturally did a fresh install, which I found was built into the system quite handily. I found I had to buy a copy of Lion from the Apple Store off another device to do this but that was no problem.

Since then I have not been able to get the machine to upgrade beyond that point. The only OS on the Apps Store on my machine I can find is Mojave which from what I’ve read it can’t handle. I’ve found of copy of Mountain Lion on the online apple store which I ordered digitally but that hasn’t shown up in my Apps Store purchases.

I’ve looked at a few guides and they’ve linked to ways to download later OSs but they all seem to require you to have Mountain Lion first. So I’m rather at a loss.

Thank you for any help

Let’s first check to see you got what you ordered. Go to “about this Mac” under the Apple and let us know what it’s telling you.

Is it the 1.7GHz, 1.8, or the 2.0?

You should have been able to do an Internet install of the original system without buying anything. There may be some firmware updates that need to be done.

it says under "about this mac" Mac OS X version 10.7.5, Processor 1.86 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 Mhz DDR3

When I try to via the internet I either get told my machine has to be at version 10.8.5 or I get this error message https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT208104

This is not a 2012 machine. At most it is a Mid 2009- 2010. What's the serial number and have you had it over 45 days?

Do the serial numbers on the bottom of the case and the serial number you get in About This Mac match?

Yeah the serials match, but I doubt I could return it as it was only advertised as a refurbished macbook air no specific date. The 2012 model was my guess.

Plug in your serial number here to see exactly what you have:
