After a drop: Display is funky, iPhone not showing up in iTunes

My sister dropped her 6S on the floor. It was turned on when she dropped it, but seemed to be turned off when she picked it up. She tried turning it back on and saw only weird colors, so she brought it to me and asked me to look into it. I used to fix iPhones for friends and family from the first iPhone to the 4S but have since gotten “out of the business”.

In this case, I’m unsure how to proceed. I figured it’s the screen, but I cannot get the phone to show up in iTunes. It does power on when I plug in the lightning cable. The home and power button are also working. I tried rebooting into DFU but that’s now working.

Based on the vibration and screen, it seems to be rebooting somewhat randomly as long as the battery is connected. I’ve opened it up and checked the cables and connectors and it all seems fine.

It might be the logic board, or it could be that both the screen and the dock connector took a beating. I’d like to avoid buying replacement parts that aren’t needed to get the phone working again but I don’t have a second (working) 6S to test parts with.

I’d be grateful for any suggestions on how to proceed with diagnosing what’s wrong with the phone so that I may figure out what steps are needed to fix it.

Normally I would say a screen issue but I am concerned that you cannot get the phone to be recognized by iTunes. That would point to a logic board issue and boards do die following drops. At this point, if you aren’t comfortable buying parts, consider dropping by an independent repair shop to have them give it a go, at least they will be able to determine if it is screen related or not.

Since I don't want to buy a mainboard but don't have a repair shop nearby that I would trust to diagnose it correctly (I know they often misdiagnose it to sell the more expensive repair), I'm now looking for a friend whose 6S I may borrow to test the parts of my sister's 6S with. Thank you though!

I can't speak for the shops in your area but fixing a phone is not like fixing a car. There are limited repair options and most shops that do micro-soldering work have a pretty simple or flat fee pricing structures. For example, I charge a fixed amount for a "dead phone" and a slightly lower amount for a "backlight" issue.

The point being that if it's not screen related, then it will probably be considered a dead phone; it's not like you can build in a bunch of bogus costs. Of course, YMMV. Best of luck!

You definitely need a screen so your first step should be replacing the screen. Then we can go on with other issues. I think after you replace the screen everything will work.

Probably not. This usually happens when the screen is broken.

If it is a plate, you can not recognize it since it does not start. With a screen you should always recognize it, without a screen or without speakers, the terminal will start normally (without image or sound)

Depending on the damage to the screen it could affect the phone showing up in iTunes. Especially if there is a short circuit on the screen connectors.

I'm confident that a new screen will fix the problem. The 6s is a relatively cheap screen (£20 in the UK). Remember that if you get a replacement that has the earpiece and home button already mounted then you'll have to swap the home button from the old screen or the touch id won't work.

The short circuiting seems to be a possibility, though I don't see how the LCD would still be showing anything at all (as it does) if it were actually shorted. I've ordered a screen now anyway just bc I've grown impatient and don't wanna keep looking for a working 6S to test the parts of the damaged 6S with. Thanks for the encouragement!

Let us know how you get on. I've had handsets in a similar condition that wouldn't boot past the apple logo because of a busted screen.

If you've ordered a screen from eBay or Amazon make sure you don't take off any protective film and test without actually fully assembling the device, if it's still dead then just repack the screen and send it back.
