RAM not showing the right amount?

Hey everyone,

Just did a logic board swap last month in my 2014 retina mbp. I bought the part off ebay, part number 661-00612 according to the listing. This specific board is supposed to have 16gb of RAM, but in my system report it only shows that I have 8gb available.

Do I need to do any systems configuration to unlock my the other 8gb I’m supposed to have or did I perhaps get sold the wrong part? Is there a way to tell on the physical board itself which part number it has?

For reference, when I got the new logic board I did a clean boot. Manually backed up my files, wiped the SSD, and installed mojave from scratch, and it’s been working great ever since.

I was probably going to contact the ebay seller about this as well, but I thought I’d check here first to make sure it wasn’t something I was doing.

Thanks

Can you spot a part number on the board?

Just check your System info from the App you find in Utilities folder, under memory you’ll be able to see what’s your memory available amount..I’m quite confident it will show 2 modules of 4GB each. There’s nothing special to do to enable RAM on the board, you might have just received the wrong one. BTW, in 2014 13” boards with 16GB RAM were quite rare and quite expensive.

Hello Geoff,

Most logic boards will contain the part number on them in some location. I personally have not worked with Macbooks so I am unsure where this would be. The most likely cause to your problem would be a wrong part number meaning you have the wrong amount of ram or one or more of your ram modules on the board are faulty. Do you know what processor is on your current board? We can use that info to help diagnose the problem. You can find this info in your system information panel in OS.

There are no RAM modules on that board, RAM is firmly soldered to it and even a single faulty RAM chip would prevent machine boot.
