A1278 battery replacement and upgrade gone wrong

I decided to try to extend the life of my MBP for another couple of years by replacing a worn out battery and adding Max RAM and SSD while in there as it was using the HD for swap. Basically, the machine didn’t have enough RAM to allow everything to be stored in it.

Basically, the everymacs article ( https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbo...) for the machine said that you can upgrade the machine to 16gb of ram even though Apple said it wasn’t officially supported. Up until this point, the machine is stock.

So, now that I’ve finished installing all the parts, the machine is dead. I had been charging it for about an hour when I decided to try and use recovery mode to reinstall a fresh install of the latest OS.

Here are the symptoms and what I’ve tried:

  • When power adaptor was plugged in, the light on the plug was green and stayed that way.
  • When the battery is plugged in, the battery indicator on the side of the machine will light up and show 6 of 8 lights for the battery level.
  • Done a SMC reset or at least tried
  • No fan, no chime, no response from pressing power button.
  • Swapped original RAM and Battery back in, got the same symptoms.
  • Currently, battery and AC are unplugged to see if I can run the capacitors empty. While I’m sorta technical, I don’t know circuit boards.
  • The system was fine, if slow, beforehand.

Thanks in advance for any help.

With no battery in the system the MagSafe cord LED should be Amber. If not you either have a bad/fake charger or the charging logic is damaged on the logic board.

Who's battery did you use and have you replaced the RAM and/or hard drive already? It's always best to only alter one thing at a time making sure it works before altering anything else. What can happen is you could have other issues clouding things.

I agree. Sometimes switching a bunch of hardware can have some weird effects on machines.

Yeah... Dang, I did all of it at the same time. I used a relatively cheap non-oe battery. The laptop is second hand. I use two different adaptors. To my knowledge they are both legit. At work, I've been using an OE 85w Apple charger (purchased for my 17" Early 2008 MBP) that I bought from the Apple section at Best Buy. At home, when I was doing the repair, I was using the Apple branded 60w that should have come with the computer.

Now that I'm thinking about it.... what is should the output voltage of the battery be for this model. I think the new battery may be over-volting the system. I may have really screwed up. The one on the battery says 11.1v.

Edit: I just looked at the the ifixit replacement and saw it is 10.95v. I think there is some tolerance for slightly more voltage but I don't know circuitry.

I screwed up yet again. I didn’t read. Executing the SMC reset PROPERLY actually fixed the issue. Making sure that you are pressing the correct buttons whilst trying to do the reset will help.

Thanks anyways to Jessica and Dan!
