Display is black, but external display works fine
MacBook is 3 years and 150 days old (just out of warranty…). Does not leave the house and has a permanent home on the desk in my home office. One night I closed the lid and the next morning had a black screen that did not wake. Can successfully connect to an external display. Apple genius technician was no help and said I need a $500 new display which I cannot afford right now. One week later and the display turned on, worked for an hour, flickered and turned off again?? Leads me to believe it is not burnt out. Would it be correct to assume a certified Mac repair technician could change just the display cable to fix the issue? I’m incredibly annoyed!

Lets see if we can narrow down what's failing here.
When the screen goes out, press a flashlight to the Apple Logo on the lid. Are you able to see the faint outlines of your desktop icons? If you do then you know the backlight has an issue.

This particular model has a mirrored Apple logo so this trick doesn’t work for me. However, I am currently sitting in direct sunlight and I can see the faintest outline of my icons. This is the first time I’ve noticed this. Also notable- if I call my iCloud I am able to FaceTime my laptop from my phone and can confirm the laptop camera is working. Not sure if that means anything.
