Phone turns itself off and then on indefinitely.

I changed the iPhone's battery and it started right up and everything worked. I thought it was fine until it shut down after about two minutes and then starts back up after about 30 seconds. I thought I might have pinched a cable near the power button so I took it apart and cleared the area near the power button (the camera). Even with the screen off and nothing tightened up, it still did the same thing. It does it connected to the charger too. What might be the problem? Thanks.

The APN of the old battery in mine was 616-0434 and the replacement that came was 616-0435.

I fitted it fine using the excellent instructions on this site. Problem was that it turned itself off every 15 minutes or so. Also took a slightly longer time for it turn on when you press the power button.

I redid the replacement as recommended here paying close attention to the contacts and screws etc. and all seems fine

I have replaced the old battery and the iPhone is working as normal. I will now research the differences and the possibility of getting hold of a '616-0434'.

Thank you for the answers here :)

3GS have battery replacement compatibility issues. What is the APN # printed on the old battery? What is the APN # printed on the new battery? Also Polly from this forum, made an interesting observation about the battery connector having either curved or straight wires. It is known that the connector is responsible for compatibility problems. If the old connector is soldered to the new battery, then the new batteries usually work.

The best advice is to buy a battery with a compatible APN # for your 3GS.

It is possible that you didn't re-seat the battery correctly under the logic board and it is making intermittent connections. Did you put the correct screws back into the logic board? All screws bar one are the same, and the one that goes right above the battery connections (Do not remove sticker) is a longer screw needed to hold the logic board to the battery.

Try re-seating and see how that goes :)
