What does one slow blink when pressing the power button mean?

I have a MBP 1278 that was, until recently, working fine.

One day I left it unattended for a bit, and when I returned it was on, but beeping, and the fan seem to be going at full speed. It was very hot, IIRC. I shut it down, and it has never turned on again.

The battery is fully charged. The only sign of life I get from it is, when I open the lid and press the power button, the sleep indicator light turns on, slowly, and then turns off slowly.

I tried the key combination to reset the SMC, I’ve unplugged the battery and pressed the power button for a few seconds, etc. Nothing has made a difference. I can’t even find an authoritative source of what light-blinking-once-slowly means.

Any suggestions?

From Apple:

One tone, repeating every five seconds: No RAM is installed. If you recently replaced or upgraded your computer's RAM, check to see if it was installed properly.

From Me:

Probable bad RAM slot, use just one stick at a time and test both slots with it. Repeat with the other stick.

I just had this issue with a 2012, replaced the two 4 GB chips with one 8 GB and it’s now working fine.

Thanks for your comment. However, this particular Mac doesn't beep at all. I'm asking the sleep light, which flashes once.

Could be the memory failing, try booting up the MacBook and see if you can get it to chime (turn on) with one ram stick installed, try them individually and in different slots to rule out a bad ram slot or ram stick.

Another thing to try is to attempt to turn on the mac with the hard drive cable unplugged as well.

Hey, thanks for the suggestions.

Removing or moving the RAM didn't do anything. I had RAM issues before, and in these cases it does either one or three beeps. So whatever is failing now, is even before it checks for RAM.

I also tried unplugging the hard drive cable. I thought it wouldn't make any difference, but with the cable unplugged, it doesn't even blink white - it does absolutely nothing.
