Replaced display - Home button has TouchID but does not work as Home?

I just did a screen replacement with an iPhone 8. Moved the Home button from old to new with no issues. I have come up with a weird issue.

After boot-up, after about 10 seconds, an on-screen home button shows up. There is no error that comes up in relation to the home button (Touch ID can not be Activated, for example.)

You can not use the Home button to turn on the device or go home. However, Touch ID still works. Can register new fingerprints. It recognizes registered vs unregistered. But it does not work as an actual Home button.

Things Tried:

  • Reboot phone fully (Vol Up - Vol Down - Power)
  • Reseated connector for Home button
  • Reseated connector onto main board
  • Inspected all connectors (All fine)
  • Cleaned connectors
  • Tried another screen in case cable on new screen caused it
  • Cleaned around edges of home button and opening
  • Ensured nothing binding on new screen opening
  • Confirmed all correct screw lengths and positions (All fine)
  • Ensures support bar was straight

I’m at a loss right now. Any suggestions?

It sounds like the turtle ic (U10) on the home button assembly has been damaged. They are pretty fragile. Check under a microscope or magnifying glass.

I did check it. Does not appear to be cracked or the edge lifted at all. I will review it further. Is there any solution if that is damaged besides an Apple store?

I can not see any issues. I don't have a camera set up to show for that small however. I can't see anything else obvious.

Well its useless now anyway so u might as well give it a go try not to do any further harm so do the following at ur own risk do it gently and only do it once... turn the flex upside down on ur desk so the turtle is face down and gently massage the back of the flex with a soldering iron, just for 10 seconds then try it

Failing that there are companies that provide microsoldering services and its possible to replace the ic

I would try another screen and see if the same condition occurs to eliminate the possibility of screen, which may not be perfect match.

I would also put the old screen back and see if that behavior repeats.

Good point forgot that as the most obvious first thing to try :)

Indicated in original post that I had tried another screen. Since my last update, I did put on the original screen, and it works. I tried a third screen. Didn't work. Tried a known good but damaged screen. Didn't work. The company doing funny stuff I'm wondering now.

The fact that original screen works, eliminates the problem with the home button. It points to the quality of your screens, or the fact that the screens you have, do not exactly match the model of this specific device. The refurbished screens are taken from the old devices and fixed up with additional layers and connectors and if devices they came from are different models, it maybe slightly tighter or looser, which may cause ghost typing, touch id problem etc...
