Screen started flickering few days after repair

So I used an iFixit iPhone screen repair kit (full front assembly), and all worked perfectly. The colours are a bit naff, but it works.

Until I spent some time on the phone - an hour(ish) of phone calls and the screen now has a horrible flicker - headache inducing, and the sound quality out the microphone is terribly poor. The front camera works fine though.

I followed all the steps in the guide to-the-letter.

Any tips/advice?

It seems like the sensible thing to do based on previous answers is to try re-seat connectors or leave it for a while - but I don’t want to risk running awry of time-bound warranty replacements or open and close my phone like a fridge door.

The flickering can be caused by a few things:

  • Bad screen (unlucky if it is the case)
  • Screen / battery was unplugged while the screen was switched on
  • Screen connectors need reseating or cleaning (clean with soft bristle brush + 99%~ ipa alcohol) due to loose connection between the connector and the ribbon cable.

When you mean sound quality out the microphone you mean the speaker that is located on the screen that you put near your ear to listen to the person trying to speak to you over phone calls right?

You’ll probably have to transfer the earpiece speaker from the old screen to the new one as it sounds like a bad quality speaker that came with the pre-assembled iPhone SE screen.

If all attempts still result in a flickering screen (sometimes it disappears after 24 hours) you’ll have to get a warranty replacement from iFixit.

Thanks for your quick reply :-)

Taking the causes in order:

1. Bad screen... I agree it seems unlikely but not impossible. fingers crossed

2. The phone was powered off for the repair & battery disconnected

3. Likely candidate. There was a more dust and grime in the housing than I expected. Will Methylated spirit have the same effect as the isopropyl alcohol?

And - yeah - that's the speaker I meant. It's not possible to swap them over as the other one is working it's way through the UK recycling system as we type! Might have to live with that.

So, the flickering has now stopped - it appears to start after it's been used for a long phone call. It doesn't seem related to heat as it got quite warm playing a game yesterday and didn't start flickering.

Perhaps I'll try cleaning the contacts & then raise an RMA.

I actually wonder if I would be better buying a "for spares" iPhone SE from Ebay if it's not had any screen work done to it?

For 3, the problem with methylated spirits is that it evaporates too quickly which is no good for cleaning very small connectors.

With spare part phones that are faulty bought online they most of the time have been either repaired before or liquid damaged.

Best ones for parts are the iCloud locked / network locked phones. They tend to be in good condition, really clean internally and have never been opened before.

I recently bought the replacement battery and left fan for my macbook pro 15" mid 2015. It seems something is wrong with ifixit products. For me it started causing exactly the same issue for my macbook pro mid 2015 display: horrible screen flicker - headache inducing. I had changed my left fan once before and it never happened until now when I used the ifixit items for first time.

I recorded and uploaded them on YouTube. I contacted with iFixit customer service and they dispatched another left fan. Let's hope this can resolve my screen flickering issue.

I am such screen flickering:
