I want to replace my HD with ext. one, how to transfer data?

I want to replace the 500gb HD in my iMac with a 1gb HD that's currently in an external HD bay. The question is, is it possible to create a bootable back up with SuperDuper! on the external drive, and then place it inside the iMac? Will that work, or will I have to perform a fresh install after replacing the HD?

You'll also want to confirm that your external drive is formatted correctly using Disk Utlilty. To serve as the start up disk for an Intel Mac like your iMac, it needs to be formatted with the GUID option rather than the Apple Partition option (which is what you'd need to boot up a Power PC).

And once you've cloned your internal drive to the external drive, you should definitely test to make sure the external drive will boot up your computer by restarting with the Option key held down. Select the external drive when you're given the option. If it boots up correctly and everything seems to be working, you should be good to go to swap the drives.

Here, too: SUCCESS! I booted from the new drive in USB enclosure, then added my movie files which were on a NAS, rebooted again to make sure everything is fine, and then made the swap. Not a single issue!

BTW I did not check for the formatting options, just did the standard format in Disk Utility (choosing Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), so I guess DU selects the GUID option by default.

http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/S... should work. As long as ur external drive is compatible with ur imac. Check Mactracker for the size and specs of your internal drive and see if your external would fit. Good Luck. Let me know what happens.

Took me a few days to get around to it, but: SUCCESS! It took about an hour to replace the actual HD, and it's a 24 inch iMac, which apparently is a bit different from the 20 inch iMacs that the guides are written for, but it works beautifully.

I bought the SuperDuper upgrade a couple of weeks ago and the speed went up by about a factor of 4. Great if you need your computer back.
