Thunderbolt ports (USB-C) no longer working

I just upgraded the HDD with a 1TB SSD and the RAM to 32GB. Did everything according to the ifixit guide and now the 2 USB-C (TB) ports don’t work. Tried re-installing the OS on the SSD, tried the old HDD still the ports don’t work. Tried to align them more properly like other people say but to no avail. Everything else works just fine. Any suggestions?

@geegor - You do realize this system does not have USB-C compliant ports. So can you tell us what you are trying to plug in.

par

@danj I am sorry, i meant the Thunderbolt ports. I am trying to plugin a thunderbolt hub (EPICO type-c hub pro II) and an Universal Audio Apollo Quad (silver) that is Thunderbolt 2 but i connect it to the imac with a TB2 to 3 adapter. As mentioned earlier, everything was working fine before the upgrade and both the hub and the audio interface work perfectly on my MacBook Pro 14,1

par

@geegor - OK, let's backup here. What happens when you plug the TB2 to TB3 adapter directly into the iMac's TB3 port with your audio adapter, does that work?

par

no, nothing works. I don't have a TB3 device except the hub.

par

So the TB2 to TB3 adapter and your audio unit directly plugged into the iMac's TB3 port does not work - Is that correct?

I suspect your ports power service is damaged. You'll need to use a power meter in-line with your device Satechi USB-C Power Meter to see whats happening.

Once you get the logic board out following this guide Changement carte mère iMac Intel 21,5" écran Retina 4K (2017) you’ll need to compare it to a good board referencing Steps 11 & 12 here: iMac Intel 21.5" Retina 4K Display 2017 Teardown. Focus on the two TI chips CD3215C00 USB-C port controller (light blue). These often get damaged

Thanks Dan! The problem though is that i will need to get hold of another logic board that i know it works well. Maybe as a last resort before giving it to a local repair center is to buy the Satechi USB-C port meter...

par

You could also have a bad TB3 to TB2 adapter which would be cheaper ;-} Thats why I wanted you to first get the meter so you can tell which is at fault.

Do you have another TB3 device to plug directly into the systems TB3 port?

par

you mean TB3 to TB2 i guess. The adapter works fine on my laptop.

Other TB3 device no...just the TB3 hub that i mentioned that also doesnt work on the imac. On the laptop it also works fine...

What should be the reading on the USB-C Voltage meter? 20V?

par

The chip is also a limiter. So when you plug in a power supply it won't over voltage the logic board (when used in a MacBook Pro). Here it is powering the USB-C ports connected devices.

Hey guys, long time no see. So after all the troubleshooting that i tried, i found somebody who is doing repairs on macs. He got my imac and said that the TB controller chips or something like that are burned. After 3 weeks i got the machine back. I changed the HDD to an SSD, installed everything and guess what...TB ports dont work again...they work ONLY with the Satechi tester. Like nothing ever changed...

The repair store is closed today, but i will contact them on Monday and see...

I cant believe this ?!?!?

Just a thought. I noticed you didn’t mention reverting back to your previous memory upgrade levels. Have you tried that?

Hey prop man, what do you mean by previous memory upgrade levels? To try with the old RAM chipset?

By the way i tried with both the original HDD and the new SSD, tried NVRAM and PRAM and SMC reset and run Apple diagnostics (no problems found-everything fine). The thunderbolt ports are being displayed as normal on the system report as well.

I just installed 32 gigs of ram and 1 tb ssd in my imac and have the same issue. Worked before installation and now not working. Any more updates on this?

I am going to take it back to my tech guys, but it seems weird that the same thing would happen.

How much ram did you put in?

What type of ram?

32GB of Kingston RAM i think

2TB of Samsung SSD

One tech guy that i took the imac to said that i probably connected a lightning bolt cable for charging on one of the ports and i "blew it up" ?!?!?

He (according to him) repaired the computer by installing new TB controller chips !??!? but he didnt fix anything, I told him that there's no way that i connected a charging cable. The computer had the same problem when i brought it at my place...

I opened the imac and didnt see any "soldering" or traces of something changed in the board. I contacted him again that its not working and we never arranged a meeting since then. I think i got scammed . He insisted again that i connected a charging cable to the ports ?!?!?! i got so angry

I am still using 1 port with the Satechi TB tester and everything is fine. I also told him that - it doesnt make sense that the ports work with the tester but dont without it...

@George Anagnostopoulos - Sorry to hear you got ripped-off. Where do you live maybe we can aim you to a better person.

Did you every figure out your issue with this?

So just upgraded a 21.5” 2017 Machine, and got the same problem. Interestingly the built-in mic seems to be an issue as well. And no it’s not because I covered the mic with adhesive. It’s just not registering anything.

System report shows TB4 available, but no TB connections will show up.

An HD TV plugged in via USB-C (in the TB ports) is working, but only in one of the Ports.

Any idea’s?

I certainly wish I was here to report an answer, but I am here because I have the same issue with both of my Thunderbolt 3 ports on my 2017 iMac 27". Upgraded the hard drive to SSD. The drive is so much faster than the fusion thing, but both thunderbolt 3 ports no longer work. I was using one of them to connect to an external monitor just fine before the upgrade. I called the guy whom did the work and he got pissy with me. I've tried everything I can try.
