Only powering on with charger

I’ve recently bought a 3DS. It can only work when the charger is plugged in. The charger can charge the battery (I’ve checked with a multimeter and a spare battery). When I unplug the charger the device shuts off. 3DS also automatically powers on when I plug the charger cable. I checked the power button but when the device is open it functions properly. I haven’t found any postings with similar issue. What can be the cause of this?

I guess there is something wrong the charging controller IC.

Usually this would be the battery causing this.

But likely the motherboard is failing if a spare battery is tried.. You could try both batteries on another 3DS. Or just to be completely sure, try it with another battery.

Not sure which IC it is.. Maybe the “Texas Instruments PAIC3010B 0AA37DW” ? Perhaps someone else knows. Anyway, I think it’s motherboard related if other batteries won’t work either.

Yeah I tried with my 2DS battery but it still didn't boot. 2DS booted however with both batteries.

Looks like there is something wrong on the motherboard.

Could also the pins (for the battery) did you checked them already?

And otherwise perhaps the IC is broken... But it's difficult to repair, or are you familiar with SMD soldering ?

is this part expensive?

Hi Lisa! The IC is not expensive, the motherboard is.

Hi

Since it works OK when connected to the power but not when on the battery, I suggest that you replace the battery and check how it goes.

Here’s a link that may help.

I tried a spare battery and the result was the same. I'll try to find another battery for testing.

Nope, the batteries powered on my 2DS so this is not a battery replacement issue.

The motherboard may be in Kiosk or display mode. This only happens when the motherboard automatically turns on when it is plugged in without pressing the on button.

How do you exit kiosk or display mode?

par

You can't exit Kiosk mode on a 3DS, since there is a fuse "missing" on the Kiosk-Versions of it as a security measure, so thiefs have less incentive to steal them.

I know this is like 3,5 years old, but you may have purchased an old Kiosk/Demo 3DS (from a Techstore/Gamestop whatever). Those models can only turn on if theyre connected to a power outlet, which is planned behaivior by Nintendo, so that Thieves have less of an incentive stealing the devices.

How to fix it? That's the neat part - you don't. At least without soldering Skills, since those models have a Fuse "missing", which would be needed to use the actual charge of the battery for the device.
