Technical question for my old hard disk

Hi, there was a problem whenever I open my mOS it makes shutdown automatically within maximum 2 min. but when I run os Windows10 using Boot Camp it's work well. The problem was solved when I changed my SSD - (MZ-JPU512T/0A6) and it is working excellent condition now.

Question is: Technically if I use the old SSD as external USB 3, will it work in good condition or not?

@ahmedabdallah - Your system uses a SSD.

The term hard disk can confuse people as that would imply you had a spinning disk drive (HDD). To be non-descriptive on what the drive really is I would just use the term 'drive'

That would not be a good idea as if you had issues with the SSD, it might be failing and you risk losing data if you continue to use it. If you buy another SSD, you can certainly use it as external storage! You just need a connector to connect the SSD to your laptop, I have left you a couple of links to what you need if you choose to go down this route!

This series uses a custom blade SSD! Ahmed used the incorrect term which mislead you ;-}

Thanks for a fast reply

I will do your advice

@danj I do see what you are talking about, however, Ahmed can still use an HDD or SSD (whichever you prefer) and use it as external storage using the connecter I specified because it uses a USB to connect! I have done this many times as since my uncle and I have Macbooks.

Re-read what he wrote.

"Question is: Technically if I use the old SSD as external USB 3, will it work in good condition or not?"

He wants to reuse his older drive. Apple uses its own custom blade drive its not SATA and its not M.2. Here's more on them The Ultimate Guide to Apple’s Proprietary SSDs

Any external drive would work via USB-A or Thunderbolt.

Yes, you can use a special case to hold your older drive (SSD) OWC offers one OWC Envoy Pro Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 EnclosureFor Apple Flash SSDs (June 2013-Current Mac Models)

Do you think my SSD will work good with (OWC Envoy Pro)? or not

For sure! If you want to re-use the drive you took out of your system as an external drive. Click on the blue link for all of the details. You can also find them on the used market as well.

@danj Regarding the problem that occurred with me in the old SSD does not affect if I use it as external SSD

par

@ahmedabdallah If your SSD gave you issues then it is probably failing! I would get a new one so you don't risk losing data!

@ahmedabdallah - No there is no difference between an internal connection and an external connection here. Your SSD's data you currently have can be off loaded to your new drive if need be.

As far as the cause of it having problems internally before, more likely you had a corrupted data block the system couldn't recover from. This is a common issue with SSD's that don't have enough free space. Reformatting it will lock these bad blocks from being used again (over provisioning will be used here) so the drive can still be used as a backup or additional storage.

As to the original cause: The issue is when you stuff so much data on the drive the OS which also needs space to hold things can't find any and/or the wear leveling algorithm which is trying to move data from over worn areas to less worn areas gets into trouble.

To prevent this you need to reserve 1/4 to 1/3 of the drive for the OS to use so for a 128 or 256 GB drive leave 1/3 of the space unused! For 512 GB or 1 TB leave 1/4 free. This is only needed on the Boot drive allowing the OS to use the space for virtual RAM, Caching and Paging.

Yianni Tsimplekis - SSD's don't fail in the same way as HDD's. Theres a very good chance it will be just fine for an external drive. Besides, if Ahmed is trying to recover his data this is the only way to do it.
