What Tape do apple use

Hi,

I have tried numerous tapes to apply when fixing broken screens. nothing comes close to the tape that is on the ipad in the first place, does anyone know what tape apple use, or the best alternative? even after applyng a bit of heat and then using clamps on the ipad for a couple of hrs the screen always lifts a bit. would love to find the oem tape that is used.

Dan

I have always used the TESA red tape and had no issues. The lifting problems are always going to be caused by frame damage and/or cable folding problems with the iPad Air, iPad 5, and iPad 6.

Everytime I work on an iPad, I hold the edge face down against a straight flat surface on all four sides to check for any kind of bend along the frame. Gentle pressure can be used to coax the frame back to straight again.

Cable folding it critical and good adhesive should be used to attach the folded part of the cable to the screen. Some replacement screens will have major differences in how this cable folds compared with the OEM screen. This may require some frame modification to attach the screen on fully without any pressure on the cable itself.

For the tape, I’ve always used the thickness to match the frame width. From my perspective, there are only two exceptions to this:

  • The max width of my red TESA tape is 5mm since that matches the max holding power of most apple tapes.
  • Tape around the digitizer wires should extend over the frame by about 1mm and be pushed into the space between the cables and the screen. This will keep it pushed down and stuck in place forever.

Hope this isn’t too much. My major point is that there are tapes that are just as effective as the OEM apple tapes. It’s not so much what you use, but how you use it.

Thank you, have tried the tesa black tape but not tried the red one yet. good point with the cable folding to avoiding ghost touch as well, i always use kapton tape around this area of the frame as well to avoid this.

Glad I could help! For iPad 6 specifically, there are many styles of how the cable folds over the digitizer. Some parts will need to have that "notch" in the frame ground down to avoid crushing the folded cable part when the device is sealed and pressed.

I’ve always had to add b7000 liquid glue at the area where the digitizer flex is as it always pushes up there.
