power up and state that it is a toshiba TV but then would go to black.

This same exact thing happened to me tonight.

My model number is: 55L621U

“ I just watched something two nights ago and then the next day the TV would not turn on. I tried unplugging it and then plugging it back in. The TV would initially come on. It would power up and state that it is a toshiba TV but then would go to black. The red power light at the bottom right hand side of the TV would stay on for about 30 seconds and then it too would shut off. I then tried the unplugging and holding down the TV power button for 30 seconds. That had the same results. Hope you can help. We have had the TV for about 3 years.”

Can anyone help??

Hello Damon,

it’s a typical issue of the Toshiba Televisors…

The main issue is producing TVs, the TVs are manufacturing on the high volume lines and the MB of TV’s is designed with regards to the warranty. The warranty is for 2 years and then what? If you are lucky, your television will work for over ten years, but if you are normal person, your TV will be “out of date”. Mean, It “may” working, but, especially of the Toshiba, television will not work. It is depending on the used components and especially the dimension of these electronics components. For example, if you are designing a “long-life” device, you will use these components, which are dimensioned much more, then you will need. Typically capacitors, they are dimensioned on the max voltage, max temperature, so you will never use the max voltage, you will use much smaller voltage with the care of the PCBA. In this television, the capacitors are straining by the high temperature for a long time, also the Vpk-pk is not stable. Some times these capacitors exploded and damaged the TV, in the other way, they are only at the end of their life.

So, disassemble your TV, take care of the dust, corrosion, cracks on the tin and shorts. They are using lead-free tin, which is better for health, but it’s worse for electronics.

Be careful and thoroughly search for the issue. Then, if you will find something, post photo :)

Good luck

I (along with many others I’m finding) am having this exact same issue which leads me to believe it is likely a firmware issue and nothing hardware related (unless these TVs were all designed to fail at the same time!) - I tried flashing the firmware that Toshiba has on their website but it goes to 20% and fails…I’m guessing this is due to the firmware being an old version and the TV not allowing a downgrade - that said has anyone found a firmware that will work? The version I tried is 20170830113420_update_casttv_uhd_01.04.088_fy17_sc_init_clear.prg which is obviously an old (possibly the original) version. Anyone with a working version out there? Thanks much!

Hi Damon - Probably a little late but are you still looking for a screen for your TV? It’s a 55” correct? Mine is in perfect condition other than the fact it will only power up as far as the splash screen then shuts down so I know the screen and backlight are fine. I’m sure shipping wouldn’t be cheap on something that big but if you want to give me your ZIP code (I’m in CO - 80301) we can check what the cost would be to send it via the different carriers and see if it would make sense to ship anyway. Thanks!

Matt-
